OCEAN TEST FAILS TO SEE "FIFTH FORCE", REAFFIRMS NEWTON'S LAW
OF GRAVITY

WASHINGTON (NOV. 26) XINHUA - AN OCEANOGRAPHIC QUEST FOR A NEW
FORCE OF NATURE INSTEAD HAS PRODUCED EXTENSIVE DATA SUPPORTING
THE LAW OF GRAVITY DESCRIBED BY LSAAC NEWTON MORE THAN THREE
CENTURIES AGO.

THE STUDY, PUBLISHED IN THE CURRENT ISSUE OF THE JOURNAL
PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS, WAS CONDUCTED TO TEST A THEORY THAT A
'FIFTH FORCE' EXISTS IN ADDITION TO FOUR BASIC FORCES IN
NATURE: GRAVITY, ELECTROMAGNETISM AND THE WEAK AND STRONG
NUCLEAR FORCES.

SCIENTISTS AT THE SCRIPPS INSTITUTION OF OCEANOGRAPHY WHO
SPENT MORE THAN THREE YEARS CONDUCTING EXPERIMENTS ABOARD
DEEP-DIVING SUBMERSIBLES SAID THAT THEY FOUND NO EVIDENCE TO
DETRACT FROM NEWTON'S THEORY.

THE SCRIPPS EXPERIMENT SUGGESTS THAT SUCH A FORCE IS NOT AT
WORK OVER DISTANCES OF A FEW FEET TO A FEW MILES, SCIENTISTS
SAID.

IN THE EXPERIMENT, THE SCIENTISTS MEASURED THE EARTH'S
GRAVITATIONAL PULL THROUGH THE DEPTHS OF THE WATER IN THE
PACIFIC OCEAN, USING INSTRUMENTS LOWERED FROM SHIPS AND
SUBMARINES.

THE EXPERIMENT DOES NOT ADDRESS SMALLER DISTANCES, OF A LESS
THAN AN INCH, OR LARGER DISTANCE, RANGING FROM A FEW DOZEN TO
ABOUT 100 MILES, SCIENTISTS ADDED.

BUT THEY STRESSED THE SCRIPPS STUDY DOES NOT END THE SEARCH
FOR A FIFTH FORCE.
