I meant to post this earlier, but I've been busy at work. I've got a
book about the ghost dance that was compiled by James Mooney, during
the 1890's. It's about 350 pages long and quite detailed as to events
and is written in the language of the times. In it Wovoka disclaims
credit for the "ghost shirt." He brought with his prophecies the idea
that all men would be joined together in understanding, and that the
dance would aid in bringing that day to fruition more quickly. The
book was originally published in 1896. The ISBN# is 0-226-53516-9
(clothbound) or 0-226-53517-7 (paper). Drop me a line if you want to
know something specific. My copy was printed in 1972. James Mooney was
an ethnologist, who was sympathetic to the indians, on commission from
the goverenment to study them...he had the occaision to speak with the
indian messiah Wovoka in person and includes it in his account. He
further traces the movement from its roots to the Sioux outbreak of
the 1890's, Wovoka was a Paiute, whose father was a "dreamer."
