Between the ages of 5 and about 8 I was fortunate to visit Tiruvannamalai
several times and have Darshans of Sri Ramana. I remember seeing him for
the first time and being somewhat embarassed of his nakedness- just a
loin cloth. He just sat and looked at devotees who trooped in did their
namaskar and sat down. When they left they did their namaskar and left. I
did not understand the reason for all this. However, as I kept coming
with my parents, I came to love the naked man. He had a serenity and a
loving smile that gave me a joy that I could not explain. Towards the
end, he was apparently suffering from the cancer that was ravaging him,
but I stll perceived his love for all around him. I remember as he was
lying in bed a devotee was about to leave he asked whether the devotee
had eaten and asked that prasadams be given to him. This is just a few
days after an operation that was to be his last.
I was too young to understand the philosophy of the man, but not
too young to bask in the warmth of the man's love for all that was around
him. I have never forgotten him.
This probably does not help in understanding Ramana, but I thought I
will share my experiences in this forum. I remember his devotees, Maj.
Chadwick who was later called Sadhu Arunachala, Paul Brunton ,Arthur
Osborn and Mrs Talayarkhan. They have left behind their interpretations
that might help. Their was another saint with him, his name was Murugunar
who wrote beautiful Tamil poetry on Ramana's philosophy.
