|AMORC as an organization was founded in this century.

|It follows that no-one who died before that could have been a member.

|The "famous figures" cited seem to have been, in some cases, Masons,
|and in other cases, only generally interested in the pursuit of
|knowledge -- sometimes occult, sometimes not.

This is not entirely fair, since AMORC can trace a direct lineage from
European esoteric organizations which chartered it at the FUDOSI congress.
The charter was expanded later on the eve of WWII when France rightly feared
Nazi invasion and persecution of Rosicrucian organizations. AMORC has
publicly published most of the documents pertaining to their descendence from
pre-20th-century European groups.

|The only even hypothetical justification for claiming them as
|Rosicrucians (AMORC or any other variety) would be the same
|definition that A.'.A.'. has used -- that anyone of a given
|character and goal is a member, whether or not they ever heard
|of the organization.

Again not quite fair. AMORC is generally pretty careful to refer for example
to Akknaten as a "traditional imperator" of the order because he clearly
belonged to no R.C. organization. When referring to Franis Bacon, the word
"traditional" is deliberately omitted.

|It follows that you don't need to send AMORC any money, or even
|your name and address. Just be the sort of seeker after knowledge
|that Newton and Franklin were, . . .

This I actually agree with. You do *not* have to join AMORC (or any other
outer school) to become a Rosicrucian. Suggested reading: _the True and
Invisible Rosicrucian Order_ by BOTA founder Paul Foster Case.
