TOWARDS THE UNION OF
NIGHT AND DAY
(invite the bell to sound three times)
(light incense)
(speaker):
We call to this assembly
all the beneficial forces of nature,
personified in both female and male forms,
to be the guardians of Western Buddhism.
As the personifications of the universal forces within all life
protect this assembly of meditation
>from all distractions which may arise.
(sound bell once)
(speaker):
Across the span of 2500 years
we can still hear the Buddha's roar;
the Buddha's words can still be heard.
Through the compassion of numerous others
we now have the opportunity to fully awaken.
Yet what good would this awakening be,
if those we love are still bound
to this world of life-and-death?
(all):
I take my guidance in the Buddha.
I take my guidance in the teachings.
I take my guidance in the community of meditators.
Through the merits of practicing the Buddha way,
may I quickly become a Buddha
and guide every living thing,
including the grass, the trees and the land
into complete Nirvana.
(sound bell once)
(all):
Though the many beings are numberless,
I vow to save them;
though greed, hatred and ignorance rise endlessly,
I vow to cut them off;
though the teachings are vast and deep,
I vow to understand them;
though the Buddha way is beyond attainment,
I vow to embody it fully.
(sound bell once)
(speaker):
Let us now practice.
(sound bell x2)
(meditate 20 minutes)
(sound bell x2)
(speaker):
Now we are finished.
Let the deities depart.
Let us thank the universe itself
for this opportunity to practice together.
May all beings be happy!
