HH-60J JAYHAWK
The United States Coast Guard plans to add over 30 medium
range recovery HH-60J helicopters to its fleet to replace the
HH-3F Sikorsky Pelican. The H-60 is similar lo the HH-3F in many
ways, and the assigned mission will be the same. However, the H-60
will have numerous upgrades including a state of the art elec-
tronics package. The H-60 is lighter, faster and the engines have
more power.
The H-60 will not be able to perform water landings, which the
H-3 is capable of. The twin-engine Jayhawk's operate up to 300
miles off and will fly comfortably at 140 knots for 6-7 hours.
Though normally stationed ashore, the Jayhawk can be carried
aboard Bear and Hamilton class Coast Guard Cutters. They will
assist in the missions of search and rescue, enforcement of laws
and Treaties including drug interdiction, marine environmental
protection, and military readiness.
The actual implementation of the HH-60J commenced in March of
1990 with the delivery of the first airframe to NAS Patuxent River
for developmental testing. ATC Mobile was the first unit to fly the
aircraft as instructor pilots prepare to begin pilot training in
March 1991. Coast Guard Air Station ELIZABETH CITY was the first
operational unit with the Jayhawk.
The Jayhawk is manufactured by Sikorsky Aircraft Division of
United Technologies in Stratford, Connecticut. General Electric
builds the T7OO-GE-401C turboshaft engines and Rockwell Internat-
ional, Collins Avionics Group manufactures the electronics system
in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

SIKORSKY HH-3F "PELICAN"
In 1969, Sikorsky delivered the first HH-3F to Air Station New
Orleans. The basic design was put in service in 1959 with a civil-
ian designation of S-61. In 1962 the U.S. Air Force ordered six
CH-3Bs. They then ordered a longer version wilt an aft cargo ramp
and designated it CH-3C. A few modifications were made to this
design to tailor the aircraft to the specific needs of the Coast
Guard. Thus the HH-3F evolved. It is from this design that the U.S.
Coast Guard ordered forty airframes to be delivered over a period
of four years.
The HH-3F, also known as the "Pelican", was designed to meet
the Coast Guard's requirement for a medium range search and rescue
helicopter. In addition to search and rescue the H3 has proven
itself very valuable and versatile in the roles of logistic
support, reconnaissance, and general utility aircraft.
The H3 is an all weather aircraft. It has a wide range of
navigation systems that includes LORAN and in some areas OMEGA.
With it's boat hull it has an excellent water landing capability.
Since the aircraft has the capability to remain airborne for over
six hours, an automatic flight control system (AFCS) was incorp-
orated to reduce pilot fatigue.
The four man crew consists of pilot, copilot, flight
mechanic, and avionicsman. The flight mech is responsible for
maintaining the aircraft and operating the hoists during rescue.
The avionicsman maintains communications with a shore based unit
and assists the flight mech during hoisting operations. The H3 has
proven itself as the Coast Guard's "can-do" aircraft.

AEROSPATIALE HH-65A "DOLPIN"
The United Slates Coast Guard has added 96 short range HH-65A
helicopters to its fleet to replace the HH-52A Sikorsky Sea Guard.
The twin-engine Dolphins operate up to 150 miles off shore and will
fly comfortably at 150 knots for three hours.
Though normally stationed ashore, the Dolphins can be carried
on board medium and high endurance Coast Guard Cutters. They assist
in the missions of search and rescue, enforcement of laws and
treaties, including drug interdiction, polar ice breaking, marine
environmental protection including pollution control, and military
readiness. Helicopters stationed aboard ice breakers are the ships
eyes to find thinner and more navigable ice channels. They also air
lift supplies to ships and to villages isolated by winter.
The HH-65A minimum equipment requirements exceed anything
previously packaged into one helicopter weighing in at less than
10,000 pounds. HH-65As are made of corrosion-resistant, composite
structure materials. The shrouded tail rotor is unique to the
Dolphin. Also a unique feature of the Dolphin is its computerized
flight management system which integrates state-of-the-art comm-
unications and navigation equipment. This system provides automatic
flight control. At the pilot's direction, the system will bring the
aircraft to a stable hover 50 feet above a selected object. This is
an important safety feature in darkness or inclement weather. Sel-
ected search patterns can be flown automatically, freeing the pilot
and copilot to concentrate on sighting the search object.
The Dolphin is manufactured by Aerospatiale Helicopter Corp in
Grand Praire, Texas. Textron Lycoming builds the LTS-101 750B-2
turboshaft engines in Williamport, PA. and Rockwell International,
Collins Avionics Group manufactures the electronics system in Cedar
Rapids, Iowa.

FALCON JET HU-25A " GUARDIAN
Forty-one HU-25A, medium range surveillance fan jets replaced
the HU-16E Albatross and the C-131A Samaritan prop driven aircraft,
in the Coast Guard aviation fleet. The Guardian's modern technology
and design enhances it's performance as the services first multi-
mission jet. It is twice as fast as previous Coast Guard fixed wing
aircraft and can get to the scene quickly to perform its role.
The HU-25A can operate from sea level to an altitude of 42,000
feet at dash speed, an important capability for the Coast Guard
missions of search and rescue, enforcement of laws and Treaties,
including illegal drug interdiction, marine environmental protect-
ion and military readiness.
The airframes were assembled in Little Rock, Arkansas at
Falcon Jet Corp., a subsidiary of Dassault-Brequet Aviation. The
acrylic search window, drop hatch for delivery of emergency equip-
ment to vessels, and other fuselage modifications unique to Coast
Guard aircraft were made at Grumman Aircraft Corporation in New
York. The Garrett turbo fan engines were manufactured in Phoenix,
AZ specifically for the aircraft's long flights. The computer
controlled air navigation system was built by Rockwell Inter-
national, Collins Avionics group in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The
Guardian has surveillance system operators (SSO) console including
Texas Instruments radar with 160-mile range, manufactured in
Dallas, Texas.
