U.S. COAST GUARD
CUTTER CLASSIFICATIONS AND CLASSES
(Revised 7-1-93)
If the U.S. Coast Guard were a navy, it would be one of the
largest in the world. The cutter designations closely follow the
U.S. Navy system. Of course USCG cutters have a "W" on the front of
these designations, which unofficially stands for "white painted
ship".
There are several major classes of cutters, and numerous
smaller classes, due to the varying nature of the Coast Guards
duties.
HIGH ENDURANCE CUTTERS
The largest cutters, except for the ocean going icebreakers,
are High Endurance Cutters, or WHEC's. These are of the Hamilton
Class. These cutters have gas turbine and diesel engines. Weapons
include: 5 inch naval gun; torpedo tubes; grenade launchers and
machine guns. As these cutters undergo modernization, Harpoon anti-
ship missiles and Phalanx weapons systems are being added. One
helicopter can be supported. Length is 378 feet, and maximum speed
is 29 knots. Crew size is 148 to 165. The numbers for this class
are WHEC-715 thru 726. The names of the cutters honor individuals.
MEDIUM ENDURANCE CUTTERS
The next class down are Medium Endurance Cutters, or WMEC's.
These are presently made up of five classes. The newest, the Bear
Class, are numbers WMEC-901 thru 913. These have diesel engines
with a range of over 10,000 miles. Weapons include one 76-mm gun
and machine guns. One helicopter can be supported. Length 270 feet,
speed 19.5 knots. Crew size is about 97. Next is the Reliance
Class, numbers WMEC-615 thru 630. Both diesel and gas turbine
engines are used. Weapons include: one 3-inch naval gun; grenade
launchers and machine guns. Length 210 feet, speed 18 knots. Crew
size is between 64-76. The next class is know as Former Salvage
Ships, and consists of three cutters, the Escape, Acushnet and
Yocona. These are former Navy salvage ships, turned over to the
Coast Guard. All were built 1943-44. All have diesel engines.
Weapons include 40 mm grenade launchers and machine guns. Length is
213 feet, speed 15.5 knots. Crew size is 77. Another hand me down
class from the Navy is the Former Fleet Tugs Class. These are
numbers WMEC-76, 85, 153, 165 and 166. These have diesel engines,
and again all were built 1943-44, and turned over to the Coast
Guard by the Navy. Weapons include one 3-inch naval gun and grenade
launchers. Length is 205 feet, with a speed of 16.2 knots. Crew
size is 76. In a class of it's own is the USCGC Storis (WMEC-38).
It was originally designed as an icebreaker for the sea's around
Greenland, and was originally named "Eskimo". The cutter has been
assigned to Alaska since 1949. Weapons are one 3-inch naval gun and
machine guns. Names of Medium Endurance Cutters show their
dedication.
OCEAN GOING ICEBREAKERS
There are two classes of ocean going icebreakers, or WAGB's.
Two of the largest icebreakers in the world make up the Polar
Class; Polar Sea and Polar Star. There were to be several others in
this class, but budget problems forced the cut to just these two.
They can support two helicopters, and have scientific laboratories
on board. Length is 399 feet, speed 18 knots. Crew size is 139. The
other class, the Mackinaw Class, is another one ship class. Built
in 1944 for service on the Great Lakes. Length 290 feet, speed 18.7
knots. Crew size is 127.
A new icebreaker received funding in 1993 and will be under
construction. This cutter will be 490' long, support 2 helicopters,
and will be able to punch through ice eight feet thick by ramming and
backing.
PATROL BOAT CUTTERS
There are several classes of WPB's. The newest, with many of
the class still building, are the Island Class (WPB-1301 to 1377).
Primary use for this class are law enforcement duties, and SAR.
These cutters have two diesel engines, and are armed with a 20 MM
cannon, grenade launcher, and machine guns. Length is 109 feet,
with a speed of 26 knots. Crew size is 16. Most of these cutters
have the word "Island" is them.
Another large class is the Cape Class, numbers WPB-95300 to
95332. All cutters of this class are named after a "Cape"
(surprised, aren't you...). They were built between 1953-59.
Although once heavily armed, they now carry just small arms. Range
is 2,500 to 3,000 nautical miles, and run on four diesel engines.
Length is 95 feet, speed 21 knots. Crew size is 17.
*Note, the last of these cutters have been decommissioned as of
July, 1993.
The last major class is the "Point" class, and as in the Cape
class, cutters are named after "Points". Cutters of this class are
slightly smaller than the others, about 83 feet. They were
originally designed for port security and SAR work. Arms include a
grenade launcher and machine guns. Numbers are WPB-82302 to 82379.
Speed is 23 knots, with a crew of 10. Cutters of this class are
being phased out by the newer Island class.
BUOY TENDERS
There are nine classes here. They include: Balsam Class (WLB-
277-407); Hollyhock Class (WLM-212 is last of class); Red Class
(WLM-685 to 689); White Class (WLM-540 to 547); Cosmos Class (WLIC-
293 to 316, and WLI-313); Buckthorn Class (USCGC Buckthorn); Berry
Class; Anvil Class; and the Pamlico Class, which is the newest.
There are quite a few other types of ships in the Coast Guard
fleet, including River Tenders (some are included in the WLB's
above), Tugs and the WSES Surface Effects Ships.
