Motorola Takes Two-Way Radio Communications Into Next Century
Today's wireless communications are going far beyond the push-and-talk
convenience of yesterday's walkie-talkies. Technology leaders such as
Motorola's Land Mobile Products Sector have guided the evolution of
wireless communications to the threshold of an ever-increasing need
for wireless data capability. Coupled with innovations in software
applications this has dramatically improved the capabilities of a two-
way radio system.
This trend has ultimately been driven by users' demands for managing
communications and information as one entity. Essentially, customers
want more from their radio system.
Driving the current growth of data and increasing its role through to
the next century will be thousands of new, network-accessible
databases. With these trends and predictions to contend with, today's
technology providers must simultaneously keep pace with software
developments while continuing to provide their customers with leading-
edge communications solutions. Motorola's commitment to meeting the
demands for wireless data capability is embodied in its
RadioWare® Software Solutions.
RadioWare® Software Solutions represents an important
evolutionary point in the history of two-way radio technology. Like
computers, two-way radio systems now feature software programs that
let users implement mobile worker applications that increase
productivity and reduce costs. Software solutions, essential to a
system's productivity, can now be tailored to meet the needs of each
customer, and the user groups within a customer's operation.
According to Bill Blandford, operations manager of RadioWare®
Software Solutions, RadioWare® is the key to keeping today's
wireless voice and data networks on technology's leading edge,
offering state-of-the-art solutions.
The objective is to satisfy customers' needs by developing new systems
that expand their communications capability," said Blandford.
"Motorola is delivering customer-driven solutions to global
markets by working with external software suppliers to develop
leading-edge software packages. This unified effort is expanding the
capabilities of integrated voice and data radio systems well beyond
traditional voice applications.
For example, with wireless data technology, paramedics at the site of
a car accident could cross-reference a vehicle registration database
with area hospital databases, obtaining the medical records of the
vehicle owners using their mobile data terminal.
Or, a utility company repair technician could respond to a customer
outage restoration request with complex wiring diagrams and an exact
location of the fault, without having to visit the operations center
to review volumes of customer usage files, or detailed examination of
power distribution equipment.
In both of these instances, information is wirelessly transmitted to
remote computers installed in vehicles. These computers receive
information in the same way that mobile radios pick up voice
broadcasts, but instead of relaying audio with a speaker, they display
information on an LCD screen.
Such wireless data communications applications suggest 21st century
visions, but these innovations are being employed today by companies
such as Motorola.
Motorola software developers have already introduced several products
that will be cornerstones in the Motorola solution portfolio. In 1991,
for example, Motorola broke ground with FLASHport(TM), a mechanism
that upgrades radio software and provides users with the latest system
software features for two-way radio systems.
Evolving into more data applications, Motorola's portfolio of
internally developed solutions includes:
WaveSoft(TM) Document Management - Provides users with simple and
timely electronic access to information and addresses the growing
concern of document-based information management. WaveSoft removes the
burdens of paper flow and its management. It can preserve original
drafts of shared documents, while retaining more than 65,000 layers of
color annotations.
The software component of a firefighter's emergency response arsenal,
this imaging and mapping solution makes data and graphical documents
on fire sites immediately accessible via dispatch link or simple
keystrokes on a computer installed in the vehicle. It eliminates
tedious review of map books and blueprints, which translates to
faster, more informed response.
The system can also alert firefighters to the presence of hazardous
materials that potentially threaten lives, all while en route to the
emergency. The combination of data and voice communications is much
more than a convenience for fire fighters-it is a life-saving
resource.
WaveSoft and WaveSoft-Fire are just the beginning for RadioWare
Software Solutions offered by Motorola," said Blandford. "We
want to offer the most complete selection of software solutions for
our customers, solutions that streamline business operations, speed
financial transactions, improve customer service, even coordinate
emergency response efforts to protect and save lives."
In addition to developing its own solutions, Motorola is taking the
lead in uniting reputable third-party software solution providers
under the RadioWare Software Alliance Program. Forging alliances with
a host of top-quality technology companies has resulted in continued
improvement in the flexibility of two-way wireless communications
systems. New applications and system refinements are evident in a
number of popular technologies. The software packages Alliance
partners bring to RadioWare's software solution portfolio include:
Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) Makes it easier to monitor the
position of vehicles in a commercial service, utility or public safety
fleet, with location displayed in real time on a computerized map.
Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) A means for public safety agencies to
control dispatch operations, and collect management information.
Message Switching A system that interfaces mobile data terminals to
local, state, and national information networks.
Mobile Terminal Messaging Facilitates interaction between the CAD
system and the Motorola Mobile Data Terminals installed in vehicles.
Records Management Captures and stores detailed incident information
for later retrieval and usage.
Report Writing A report generation system designed to streamline
paperwork by selecting specific incident reports, then completing and
processing them. Reports can be customized for various organizations
and businesses.
TX Emulation Software Provides a configurable text window on a laptop
computer identical to a Motorola Mobile Data Terminal screen.
These forward-thinking software solution packages all embody the
vision of the RadioWare Software Alliance Program: provide customers
with the ability to conveniently upgrade the functionality of their
wireless communications equipment, and get the most from their systems
now and well into the future.
And while offering optimal wireless communications solutions, the
Alliance program requires partners to meet Motorola's ongoing
commitment to Six Sigma quality standards, which earned Motorola the
coveted Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award.
To be a partner under the Alliance Program, developers will be skilled
at integrating with Motorola software tools, producing essential
technical documentation and reducing development cycle times. They
will also provide excellent customer service and offer leading-edge
software technology.
Some current Motorola RadioWare Software Alliance Program partners
include: OCS Technologies Corp., a designer of law-enforcement
specific software; Westinghouse Electric Corp., a developer of mobile
information systems for public safety; Tusk, Inc., a designer and
manufacturer of field computing systems; and Impact Solutions,
software tools developed to enhance the capabilities of software
applications designed on Motorola's two-way radio networks. They can
be compared to "glue," holding the software and hardware together.
Tools such as Magic Pipe(TM) will be used by software developers both
internally and externally for the development of software operating on
current and future Motorola radio systems.
With developers writing to the Magic Pipe interface, Motorola can
offer its customers integrated software applications. The software
service tools of RadioWare are the key to maintaining Motorola's
competitive edge in the future of wireless data communications.
Software Implementation Service
Motorola will offer its customers both pre-sale and post-sale software
support. This will entail thorough analysis of customer needs,
combined with the integration of the right software solutions and
support services. Through program management, software system
integration, 800-number support hot lines, on-going maintenance
programs and software updates, Motorola will make certain that first-
rate software service continues well after initial system set-up.
Building the Foundation of Future Communication
The combination of Motorola's internal software innovations with the
expertise of leading application developers creates an unprecedented
offering of complete software solutions. This dynamic pairing of
internal and external resources results in reliable, integrated
communications systems that are meeting the world's voice and data
wireless transmissions needs head-on, while taking the technology to
new markets formerly unfamiliar with its benefits.
Software is quite likely the fastest growing segment for mobile data
vertical markets, concluded Blandford. "Motorola is spearheading the
development of customer-driven software solutions and communications
components. The mutual efforts of Motorola and our RadioWare Software
Alliance partners will result in better quality products, improved
applications and, most importantly, first-rate customer service."
