email to libernet-request@Dartmouth.EDU.  The text of your message was
not processed; hopefully this will answer some of your questions.

All subscription requests concerning the Libernet lists are now handled by an 
automated server.  Guidelines for new users are shown below, including
subscription information.  Please save this for future reference, as it
also tells you how to unsubscribe and change subscription modes.  


LIBERNET GUIDELINES FOR NEW USERS

Libernet is intended to be a forum for high-quality, real-world oriented
presentation of information of interest to classical liberals, libertarians,
objectivists, and anyone else interested in applying the philosophy of
liberty to the problems of our day.  It is also intended for the
rapid dissemination of news items that friends of liberty might be
interested in.  Accordingly, the following topics are appropriate
for postings to Libernet:

1) News items: quotes/articles from major newspapers relating to
market-oriented approaches to social problems, support for civil
liberties, etc.
2) Book reviews
3) Election results
4) Personal stories about campaigning, convincing others about the
merits of liberty, etc.
6) Copies of letters to the editor
7) Conference/seminar announcements
8) Upcoming media events of interest
9) Questions about any of the above.

The overriding principle of Libernet is that is not to be used as a
forum for interactive discussion.  Questions are perfectly appropriate, 
provided their answers are suitable material for Libernet.  Within this 
context, readers are asked to use their judgement.

LIBERNET-D: Users interested in a more opinion and idea-oriented forum may
wish to subscribe to Libernet-d (the "d" stands for discussion and debate).
Libernet-d is intended for the interactive discussion of the more 
philosophical issues related to a free society, such as political strategy, 
ideology, and intellectual analysis of libertarian positions.  There
is no coupling between Libernet and Libernet-d; readers may subscribe
to either one or both.  

SUBSCRIPTION INFORMATION: Both Libernet and Libernet-d are available in two 
subscription modes: batch mode and reflective mode.  Batch mode subscribers 
receive one message every day, the "Digest", consisting of the most 
recent contributions to Libernet or Libernet-d packaged together according to 
RFC 1154.  (If you don't know what this means don't worry about it; nothing 
special is required to receive batch mode messages).  Reflective mode 
subscribers receive individual messages as they are posted.  

To subscribe to Libernet and/or Libernet-d in the appropriate mode,
send one or more of the following in an email message
to "Majordomo@Dartmouth.EDU":

        subscribe libernet-batch-list
        subscribe libernet-reflected-list
        subscribe libernet-d-batch-list
        subscribe libernet-d-reflected-list

This will subscribe the account from which you send the message to the
appropriate list.  Multiple requests may be included in a single message.

If you wish to subscribe another address instead (such as a local
redistribution list), you can use a command of the form:

        subscribe [list name] other-address@your_site.your_net

UNSUBSCRIBING AND MODE CHANGES

To unsubscribe, replace "subscribe" with "unsubscribe" in the commands
of the previous section.  Mode changes are accomplished through 
unsubscribing and subscribing from and to the appropriate lists.

ATTRIBUTION: Libernet messages are frequently reprinted in other publications, 
along with an acknowledgement of the posting party.  If you do not wish this
to happen, please indicate so in your posting.  Otherwise, it is assumed that 
all postings to Libernet may be reproduced provided ackowledgement of
the author is given.

PRIVACY: The list of Libernet subscribers and sites is regularly made
available to anyone.  Please contact owner-libernet@Dartmouth.EDU if this
presents a problem.

HOW TO POST: To post to Libernet, send your contribution to 
libernet@dartmouth.edu (internet), or ...dartmouth!libernet (uucp).  To post
to Libernet-d, replace "libernet" with "libernet-d" in the previous 
addresses.

LONG POSTS:  Frequently bills before Congress, articles from magazines
and other items that may be of interest to Libernet are excessively
lengthy for a complete submission.  Contributors are encouraged to
summarize the contents and provide information as to where the full
text can be found.  Complete submissions of legislative drafts,
book chapters, and so forth are probably not appropriate, but concise summaries
of them are.  Uuencoded images and other binary files should not be
posted, but announcements of their availability and instructions on
how to obtain them are appropriate for Libernet.

In accordance with this policy, articles longer than 32K will be deleted 
from both digests by the Libernet software.  They will, however, be sent 
out in their entirety to reflected mode subscribers.

OBTAINING BACK OR MISSED ISSUES: The five most recent copies
of the batch-mode Libernet and Libernet-d digests are always available via 
anonymous ftp from coos.dartmouth.edu (129.170.16.50), in the "Libernet" 
directory.

INACTIVE ACCOUNTS: If you learn that your account is about to become
inactive (for example due to graduation or a career change) please ask 
to be removed from Libernet.  This will save me a lot of hassle with 
bounced mail messages.

COMPUSERVE USERS:  Please check your mail often, and do not let your
mailbox fill up.

MICROSOFT MAIL USERS: When posting to libernet and libernet-d, turn the
"Automatically send read receipts" option off.  Otherwise, every time you
read a message a return receipt will be posted to me and/or the entire list.
Similarly, do not request return receipts when posting to libernet and
libernet-d.
