Subject: Libertarian Source List
Hello Libernetters, especially those who have joined in the last month...
LIBERNET may not be the best source for getting the basic info you
might be looking for on libertarianism or the Libertarian Party. It's
really intended for communicating news items, articles, and so on. So,
let me recommend some places you can get good information about libertarianism.
SOURCES OF FREE INFORMATION
1. The Libertarian Party
Give them a call at 1-800-682-1776. They'll send you a free info kit on
the party itself. In Washington State, call 1-800-353-1776.
2. Advocates for Self-Government. Give them a call at 1-800-932-1776.
They are a non-profit
organization dedicated to helping people learn more about
libertarianism in general and they'll send you a free magazine called
"The Liberator."
3. Laissez-Faire Books
Give them a call at 1-800-326-0996. They'll send you their free monthly
catalog of libertarian-oriented books. Just reading the catalog and its
book reviews will give you a good sense of the range of libertarian
thought and the wide scope of libertarian scholarship and the many
organizations that make up the libertarian movement.
4. The Cato Institute
Give them a call at 1-800-767-1241 and ask for their free publications
catalog. This is the premier libertarian thinktank, and hosts
conferences that are often broadcast on C-SPAN. Their analysts often
write for the New York Times, Wall St. Journal, and appear on many
major news programs.
5. The Foundation for Economic Education
Give them a call at 1-800-452-3518. They are an academic organization
which publishes books, monographs, and the monthly magazine, "The
Freeman"; organizes conferences; and provides scholarships for
students. Ask to be put on their mailing list and have them send you
some information.
A VERY SHORT READING LIST
One of the best libertarian publications (not affiliated with the
Libertarian Party per se) is Reason magazine, available at better
newsstands and at many B. Dalton Booksellers. Many of the books listed
below can be ordered from Laissez-Faire Books (listed above) and can be
found in libraries and used bookstores, etc.
Best Introductory Works:
"Restoring the American Dream" Robert Ringer
"For a New Liberty" Murray Rothbard
"Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal" Ayn Rand
"Free to Choose" Milton Friedman
"Economics in One Lesson" Henry Hazlitt
And please, if you have any questions on things Libertarian, please
don't hesitate to email me directly!
