CHOMSKY DOCUMENTARY AVAILABLE ON VIDEO
On November 15, more than two years after its theatrical launch,
the internationally acclaimed documentary film MANUFACTURING
CONSENT: NOAM CHOMSKY AND THE MEDIA by Mark Achbar and Peter
Wintonick will be released on home video in the United
States.
Manufacturing Consent can be ordered in the U.S. by calling
1 800 MANU CON. In Canada call 1 800 668-6322.
A companion book to the film which includes a complete transcript
of the film, key excerpts from Chomsky's writings and interviews,
historical and biographical material, filmmakers notes, a
resource guide and more than 270 stills can be obtained by
calling (212) 564-3730 in the U.S. Please call 1 800 656-9523
in Canada.
Funny, provocative and surprisingly accessible, MANUFACTURING CONSENT
explores the political life and ideas of Noam Chomsky, world-renowned
linguist, philosopher and activist. In an energetic collage of
new and original footage, archival gems, imaginative graphics
and illustrations, the film highlights Chomsky's incisive analysis
of the media.
As a boy during the Depression Chomsky ran his uncle's newsstand
in Manhattan. Today he is a fiercely outspoken critic and one of
America's leading dissidents. Chomsky focuses on the theory and
practice of propaganda in democratic societies where, he argues,
populations are subjected to more subtle forms of ideological
control. He reveals how mainstream news coverage of world events
mobilizes public support for the "special interests" that dominate
society through a process he calls the "manufacture of consent."
Drawing on wide-ranging and persuasive examples, including a
comparative study of the media coverage of Cambodia and East Timor
in the mid-seventies, he shows us how information is "filtered"
to serve the agendas of those with power. As protection against such
manipulation, Chomsky encourages us to undertake a course
of "intellectual self-defense" and to strive to make the media more
democratic. He sketches out a vision of a new society where citizens
will actively participate in social and political life.
While the film has been broadcast on numerous foreign networks, no
U.S. broadcaster, including national and regional PBS, has agreed to
televise the film. In Canada, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation
only accepted to accommodate the film after an intense lobbying and
letter-writing campaign. A similar campaign is now underway in the U.S.
