FWIW

     The serious-crimes rate has increased 4.25% in South Africa
     this year.

     The murder rate in South Africa in the first eight months of
     1994 was 56.5 per 100,000 people.  This compares with 18
     murders per 100,000 in Russia, and 9.8 murders per 100,000
     in the United States.
