Subject: Welcome to the anarchy-list

	Welcome to the anarchism mailing list.

First: please please *please* keep this posting, so you can refer to
it when you want to unsubscribe, change address, etc.

	+++++++++++++++++++++++++++
	+ WHAT IS THE LIST ABOUT? +
	+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

This mailing list is intended as a place where we can discuss various
topics related to anarchism, i.e. society without government. Note
that there are mostly left-anarchists on the list, but a few
libertarians as well. Please refrain from starting general libertarian
vs. anarchist discussions: we have had them every few months, they
never convince anyone either way and usually end in names-calling.
Most of the messages on this list tend to be discussion-oriented, for
a more event-information oriented mailing list you could try the
ACTIV-L mailing list, newsgroup alt.activists.

	+ VOLUME +
	++++++++++

There are currently about 250 people on the list (difficult to tell
exactly due to redistribution points), and traffic is variable (from
zero to 20 messages per day).

Because of this rather high volume I kindly ask everyone to take
a little care when posting:
- If you reply to a posting, and your mailer sends replies 'To:' the
  originator and 'cc:' the anarchy-list it is probably a good idea to
  edit the header to make the message only go 'To:' the list. Otherwise,
  the original poster will get two copies of your reply.
- Try to refrain from making a point again and again: it won't convince
  your opponents.
- Try to cut down on the amount of included text, the turnaround time
  is fairly short, so just quoting the relevant sentences should be
  enough.

The mailing list is currently organised as a simple mail-echo,
so every message that is sent is immedeately retransmitted to
all subscribers.

	+ RELATED STUFF +
	+++++++++++++++++

If you're interested in anarchist writings you should check out Spunk
Press, either via www at
http://www.cwi.nl/cwi/people/Jack.Jansen/spunk/Spunk_Home.html, or via
ftp or gopher to etext.archive.umich.edu, directory
/pub/Politics/Spunk. You can also find an anarchist resource list
there, giving pointers to other anarchist mailing lists, archives,
etc.

	+ ADMINISTRATION +
	++++++++++++++++++

To subscribe, unsubscribe, have your address changed and for all
other administrative issues, you can send a message to

	anarchy-list-request@cwi.nl

The list isn't managed by a listserver, so you don't have to say
'UNSUB', you can just say 'Jack, please unsubscribe me':-).
Also, you should *REALLY* send your message to this address and not to
anarchy-list. When I'm busy I don't read the list too often, but I
always read the -request messages. Also, if I don't react to your
request: ask again, I might have missed it in my 100+ messages per
day. Before you flame me remember that I've been subscribing and
unsubscribing 2-4 people per day for the last 5 years or so, not to
mention all the error messages I have to read and decipher.

	+ POSTING A MESSAGE +
	+++++++++++++++++++++

To post a message, send it to

	anarchy-list@cwi.nl

If your machine doesn't know how to get to cwi.nl: all backbone sites do.
So, mail to 'anarchy-list%cwi.nl@uunet.uu.net' or something similar
should work. From a uucp site something like
   ...!uunet!cwi.nl!anarchy-list
should do the trick. Sorry, I don't know how to get there from
fidonet, decnet or bitnet, but your system administrator might be able
to help.

	+++++++++++
	+ ARCHIVE +
	+++++++++++

An archive of all messages ever posted to the anarchy-list (since
1988!) is available. It is accessible through WWW with URL
http://www.cwi.nl/cwi/people/Jack.Jansen/anarchy/anarchy.html.
Client programs for WWW include xmosaic, NCSA mosaic, lynx and a few
others.

	++++++++++++++++++
	+ ERROR MESSAGES +
	++++++++++++++++++

If everything works as expected all error replies for unknown
mail addresses, etc. should be sent to me, not to the poster of a
message. In case you do get an error reply, please forward it to
the -request address. Don't flame me if you get an error: I can't help
it, it is silly software on the other side of the ocean that is to
blame. On the other hand: the fact that you get strange and wondrous
error messages from buggy software shows that there is at least one
anarchistic body in the world that works:-)

One final request: please, Please, *PLEASE* send me a note when you
lose your account for the summer, quit your job, go to jail or otherwise
become netless. It is a major hassle to try and find out what happened
to mail addresses that suddenly seem to have disappeared. I usually
try to make sure that someone really has disappeared before taking
them off the list, but when the volume of bounced messages gets really
high (usually in the beginning of summer) I tend to go into Terminator
mode and just take people off the list when mail starts bouncing. So,
if you see a sudden lull in anarchy-mail drop me a line, I've probably
inadvertently removed you.

Bye,
