When the Atlantic Institute for International Affairs was founded in
1961 it was, according to their literature, conceived as "a sort of public
support arm of NATO." By now it is more accurate to call them lobbyists
for international capital. In this 1987 list the Board of Governors has
about 100 members from Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark,
Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Netherlands,
Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom, and
the U.S. We have little information on the activities of the Atlantic
Institute itself, making this list useful mostly for the individual's
affiliation beneath each name. These people are, for the most part,
chairmen or directors of major corporations and financial institutions.
We do know that the Atlantic Institute is sometimes mentioned in the
same breath as other groups of internationalist elites: Bilderberg Group,
OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development), Trilateral
Commission, World Bank, and International Monetary Fund. As internationally
mobile capital becomes more powerful, these groups seek to further break
down the barriers between the advanced industrial nations. The faster they
can move money and products, the more they profit. But needless to say,
individuals who aren't players in this exclusive game don't get to vote.
