hundred and seventy five, to the fifth day of December in the year
of our Lord, seventeen hundred and seventy five, 1,024 British
colonists in the Americas were polled to gather their opinions on
the recent events in the American colonies.
Are the British doing a good job in administering the Colonies?
British doing a good job : 63%
Not doing a good job : 22%
Don't know : 15%
Do you think that the dumping of tea in the Boston Harbor helped or
hurt the taxation laws in the New World?
Hurt the cause of taxation : 79%
Helped the cause : 12%
Didn't make any difference : 9%
Which of these two Georges can do more for the Colonies : George III
or George Washington?
George III : 76%
George Washington : 14%
Others : 10%
(It is interesting to note that 80% of the people questioned had never
heard of George Washington.)
What do you think our image is in England after the Minute Men
attacked the British at Lexington?
Minute Men hurt our image : 83%
Gave British new respect for us : 10%
Undecided : 7%
Do you think that the "Declaration of Independence" is a good or bad
document?
Good document : 12%
Bad document : 14%
No opinion : 74%
(A significant portion of those polled felt that the Declaration of
Independence had been written by radicals and that the publishing of
it at this time would only bring harsher measures from the British.)
Do you think that Patrick Henry did the right thing in demanding
liberty or death?
Did a foolhardy thing, was a troublemaker : 53%
Did a brave thing, made his point : 23%
Should have gone through the courts : 16%
Don't know : 8%
On the basis of the results of this poll, the militant colonists
decided they did not have enough popular support to foment a
revolution and gave up the idea of creating a "United States of
America."
