   LIVERMORE, Calif., July 11 (UPI) -- The origin of a mysterious red
light that temporarily blinded a police officer has investigators
baffled, authorities said Thursday.
 
   Lt. Dave Hoig of the Alameda County Sheriff's Department said
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, where laser weapon research is
conducted, has been ruled out as a source of the glowing red beam that
blinded the officer early Tuesday morning.
 
   Gordon Miller, a laser safety specialist at the lab, said he believed
the beam could have come from one of two sources, but almost certainly
was not extraterrestrial in nature.
 
   "It almost strikes me as some kind of industrial device out of
alignment," he said. "Or a kid clever with a laser or gadgets pulling a
joke."
 
   The beam has been reported on several occasions by truckers.

   "At this point, we are unsure of the origin of the light," said Larry
Southard, who is the night supervisor of a nearby landfill.  "Whatever
it's source, we are very concerned that it could blind a driver and
cause a crash."
 
   Deputy Richard Frish was dispatched to check out the report at 1:56
a.m. PDT Tuesday.
 
   When Frish arrived, he noticed a red beam of light and suddenly felt
a warming on his left cheek. He turned to look at the light and was
blinded. Frish was able to safely steer his patrol car out of the beam
and regained his vision a short time later.
 
   A search of the area failed to turn up the source of the beam.
