Wayne, Billy, Lew, George, Chris & All;

It's official. My map supplier got a fax from the NOS/DMA in the USA. 
They refuse to supply us with *ANY* maps of Antarctica. ALL the maps I 
ordered - covering most of Anarctica  are "not available".

Chester, the guy at Avex Air, who is the agent for the National Ocean 
Service/DMA maps told me that he's had this before. He says that 
whenever something "sensitive" affects the US Govt they suddenly STOP 
supplying Tactical Pilot's maps for the area concerned.

He says it's happened to him before during the Iran/Iraq war, in 
South Yemen, Yugoslavia and recently in Monrovia. He says reporters & 
other people often want to go there, so the US Govt just stops the 
supply of Operational Maps.

He had warned me before of this. But now we know for sure. This was 
our SECOND request for those maps. As we said, the first order "went 
missing" - that order was placed in April this year.

As I said to Chester, "What's the US Govt hiding in Antarctica then?" 
What's so special about the place?

Of course, those maps are not of any of the regions near the South 
Magnetic pole. My order went in for a miscellany of maps covering the 
North & South Magnetic poles, plus a few other areas of interest to 
me. It's a bit of a cross section of maps. It is an order for a total 
of 11 maps covering Alaska, Canada, the South Magnetic pole & a few 
other areas of interest to me. So let's see what they will & won't 
supply.

I'm not too worried about those Antarctic maps - however, Wayne, if 
you ever can lay your hands on any GNC maps (also from the National 
Ocean Service/DMA) - then see what you can get. You won't need as 
many maps to cover the area. We're mostly interested in the South 
Magnetic pole, however - whatever you can get regarding the Antarctic 
is still going to be useful. 

The Antarctic doesn't seem to be a place the US Govt WANTs people to 
go to. I wonder why the whole continent is out of bounds - except via 
"narrow" routes with existing companies?

While writing this e-mail Chester phoned me again. He told me he 
phoned the guy he deals with in the USA & the guy looked on the 
computer & he said that there is a RESTRICTION placed on *ALL* 
Antarctic maps. They can not be released. So it's not that they're 
"not in print" - it's just that they are not allowed to sell them - 
currently!

He asked about my South Magnetic pole maps & was told that the "V" 
series (the region around the South Magnetic pole) are also 
restricted & can not be released. This is the area south of 
Australia/Tasmania.

Unfortunately Chester didn't ask about the "C" & "D" series maps 
which cover Alaska & Northern Canada. The maps go from "A" at the 
north pole down to "Z" & "W" at the South pole.

So there it is Wayne. Absolutely ZILCH available on the Antarctic. 
See what you can scrounge. At this time I have no idea what other 
companies I can approach to supply me with Tactical Pilots maps or 
even Sea Charts. If any of you have any ideas I'll try them out.

I just find it fascinating that the ENTIRE Antarctic continent is out 
of bounds - as far as flying freely whereever one wishes!

The only thought that's crossed my mind is this: Due to the UFO flaps 
currently in Australia & Brazil - could these in any way be due to 
UFOs coming from ANTARCTICA? Will these maps be available at some 
future date or never? Are they scared that people wandering around 
the Antarctic might see too many UFOs? Or is there someone on those 
maps which they don't want us to see? Why the BLANKET ban on the 
entire continent?

What do you guys think?

Wayne. The South Magnetic pole maps - that's a bit of a blow to me. 
However, it might be worthwhile scrounging around and seeing what you 
can lay your hands on. Those GNC maps were absolutely fantastic too - 
though they come from the same place. See what you can get - North & 
South poles. Don't send it though. Just see what you can lay your 
hands on first. I don't think we can risk the post. But just the fact 
that one of us has something will make me feel better. We can always 
FEDEX or DHL the stuff when we need to.

It might be a worthwhile exercise to just keep poking & probing 
around. I'd like to see how wide this ban is. I'm curious as to 
whether such maps are available in other countries.....

BTW, I got the Arctic Maps ok months ago. So the "top o'the world" 
is not out of bounds. I'm now curious to see what the buzz is with 
the North Magnetic Pole. This leads me to mention something else.

On the NOS/DMA catalogue I noticed that there are no maps of the 
Beufort Sea, just north of Alaska, Canada where we suspect the major 
part of the hole lies. The "C" maps (two of them) lie on what I 
suspect might be the rim - that's all that's available - unless, we 
turn to Sea charts. That is a possibility I've not explored yet. I 
first want to see what my latest & last order does turn up.

Just seeing what the US Govt doesn't want us to see - that of itself 
might be educational....
