The recent story of the Hopi meeting with the Tibetans jogged my memory and
I recalled my intention to recount parts of an adventure I had earlier this
fall. In Oct. I had the good fortune to be able to go hang out and walk with
the Sunbow5 Walkers, who were in Arkansas and on a native American
intitiated walk across the US. The purpose of which is to draw attention and
healing energies to the Earth and the 5 races of peoples that reside here.
The necessity for this walk was received in dreams and visions mainly
through the person of spiritual leader and Elder, William Commanda, an 80+
year old Indian man. I spent a week with them after joining up in Little Rock.

One morning we were breaking camp, preparing to move to another location
when a big school type bus pulled up that some of the walkers recognized,
"The Children's Torch of Hope" emblazoned in colorful art work on the side.
As they came off the bus both groups came together and many big hugs were
enjoined all around. This group, calling themselves "The Earth Guardians",
began in Hawaii as a creative effort of children to reach other children on
issues of environmental awareness. They developed a whole performance aspect
to their work eventually becoming so popular among the islands that they
decided to "take it on the road". They turned up at the foot of the
Washington Monument in Washington DC as members of the Sunbow5 group (incl
William Commanda) were gathered in ritual Circle and were invited to join
and a deep connection made.

Folks let me tell you this was one beautiful bunch of kids. These kids,
mostly teenagers, watched over by a woman and this woman's parents were
crisscrossing the US, heading to Mexico, Costa Rica, and other places and
carrying a torch, the "Torch of Hope" mentioned on the side of their bus.
This torch had been around the world already as a symbolic part of some
other world consciouness efforts such as the World Handicap Olympics and had
been handled by many dignitaries and spiritual leaders, the Dalai Lama and
the Pope being examples of the level involved. 

These kids sing, rap, and dance their own compositions and choregraphy all
espousing themes of Universal Love and Planetary Healing. and they get along
by the seat of their pants, much like the Sunbow Walkers, carrying their
message of healing with them as they go. 

Well a Circle was called for, the Torch of Hope was lit, and the two groups
gathered around holding hands as the kids sang and performed a couple of
their numbers. Then one of the pipe carriers and medicine men with the
Sunbow group, Joe Soto, said that he would like to sing a song. Joe told us
that this song was a very special song in his tradition and was very very
old ...10,000 years old. Joe was such a fine singer, I was treated to and
enjoyed his singing many times the week that I spent with him.

We were by ourselves standing out in the sun in our own large area of this
State campground ... Joe Soto's voice, beautiful and so fully resonant that
it was respected by all other sounds and potential distractions, could be
felt inside, vibrating, as well as heard. 

As Joe sang the 10,000 year old song on this beautiful clear warm morning as
we all stood hand in hand in Circle I can't tell you how it affected me
personally except to say that I was shaking and crying. It was such a moving
experience. I could feel the presence of generations upon generations
listening once again to this most ancient song. Even nature responded ... 3
turkey vultures (who represent *change* I was told) circled above in honor
of the moment.

After Joe finished his song the Torch was passed around and one by one we
spoke aloud or in silence a prayer for the planet and Her people. 

It seemed so very portentious as many of the songs and ritual, including
sacred pipe ceremony, that we were being allowed to experience and
participate in on this trip had been kept hidden and protected from outside
cultures for so long and only now were being allowed *out* as, according to
the vision that inspired this varied group of many different native peoples
to undertake the Walk, it was now time for them to open and to receive all
who would now come in sincere intention to learn from native people how to
know, heal, and to care for, ourselves, the 5 races, and our Mother Earth.
