Standoff in Oakland: Collins Places Fourth
                        out of Eleven Candidates!

                                by

(Oakland, California State, Nov. 12)
The California Republican Assembly Endorsing Convention in Oakland
ended with no one getting the coveted endorsement. The first round
of voting produced some surprising results.

The fact finding committee, to the displeasure of the majority
of delegates, recommended Phil Gramm. The recommendation was voted
down and not accepted.

Buchanan was the clear leader when the first count was done,
with Keyes coming in second. Phil Gramm, who sent Arizona Senator
McCain in as a pinch hitter, came in third.
McCain did little to gain support for Gramm when he attempted
to defend Gramm's vote on NAFTA and GATT.

When asked by a delegate about the unpopular agreements, McCain
stuck his foot deep into his mouth by commenting, "I don't care if we
send all of the factory jobs to Mexico. I want my kids to be
engineers."
This offhand comment was confirmed by several delegates who
proceeded to ask him even tougher questions like, "What if our children
don't want to be engineers, Senator?" and, "What if we got into
an other war. Senator, how would you we be able to build our arms,
planes and tanks if all of our factories are overseas or
in Mexico?"

It became obviousthat war hero McCain and Senator Gramm believe
that with the New World Order and the UN to protect us, we won't need
weapons any more than the Bosnian Muslims.

Dornan may have lost what little support he had when he admitted
he had told Michael New to go to Macedonia, put on the UN uniform,
and "Let me fight this battle for you, son."
The cold reception made it clear New is a hero to Conservatives
everywhere. Dornan took the hint and dropped out of the race
altogether, apparently deciding to run for his seat in the House
of Representatives once more!

The real surprise was Charles Collins placing fourth with
twice the combined votes of Dole, Lugar, Taylor, Forbes, Alexander
and Specter all put together. Collins, who had been largely unheard
of before this convention by many of the delegates, was very
well received though most of the delegates were already committed.
The work of his volunteers, some of whom were CRA members who had
been shut out by their local groups as delegates, did an excellent
job of acquainting the attendees with Collins' platform.

Collins' speech on Saturday drew many compliments and much
applause from the delegates for his knowledge, his platform, proposed
solutions and his courage in revealing the facts surrounding the
Federal Reserve system. He touched upon the War Powers Act
and vowed to repeal it and end the Emergency Powers of the
President. His vow to end the Income Tax and abolish the IRS
echoed similar articles run in the CRA's own newsletter. His promise
to withdraw from the UN and support Michael New drew tremendous
response but his use of historical documents and quotes to support
his platform of abolishing the Fed, ending the National Debt
and usher in Constitutional, debt-free money was clearly the high
point of his speech.

But the die had been already cast and the players lined up.
The votes he received, while more than all the others behind him
combined, were not enough to affect the outcome and he was eliminated
on the second round of voting.

There was a motion to eiminate Collins on the first round, but
it was voted down by a majority of delegates. This was the first
indication of the respect he had earned by his gracious manners
and the total lack of animosity for his fellow candidates.

When he was eliminated on the second round,a ripple of
applause started in the middle of the room and erupted
within a few seconds to a full scale, standing ovation for
Mr. Collins, the only candidate to stay for the voting. For
what seemed an eternity, the crowd turned towards the wings
and applauded him.

The rest was anti-climactic. Gramm was eliminated next
and his supporters moved en masse into the Keyes camp.
The result was 54% voted for Keyes while Pat's followers stood
fast with 46%. The convention, which went into overtime, was
forced out of the Hilton's ballroom and onto the patio.
Though the number of delegates dwindled as the day wore on,
the percentages stayed very nearly the same. As a result,
neither candidate was able to garner the 2/3 majority needed
for the endorsement.

Bay Buchanan,Pat's sister and his campaign manager who stayed
for the voting, came by to meet and talk with Mr. Collins. She was
impressed by his platform and the obvious impact he had
on the assembly even though he was relatively unknown to
the delegates.

Bay suggested that Pat and Mr. Collins meet in Florida. Is
this a social call or something more? If Buchanan is serious about
returning us to the Constitution and breaking the hold
of the New World Order, he would have to know it could not be done
without doing away with the Federal Reserve. There is no candidate
besides Mr. Collins who is bringing that knowledge to the
American people. With Pat's visibility and fundraising capability
and Mr. Collins' knowledge, sincerity and patriot following,
what a Dream Team for America they could be.

Time will tell.
