                              Generation Ships

At some point in man's future, he will by necessity need to seek
out other worlds in other solar systems in which to propagate the
human race.

It may take many generations to locate another world capable of
sustaining life for man. Such a journey is absolutely inevitable
someday. A giant ship the size of 2 aircraft carriers would be
required to house the thousands of people needed to maintain the
various life sustaining requirements. The ship would become a
community from which many new bonds would form.

Hydroponics, animal husbandry, and recycling would be the catch-words
of the day. The purpose would not be to send word back home, but
to find and colonize a new world in another solar system. If the
mission is successful, the ship may even continue on to another
potential life sustaining planet, after a fledgling colony had been
established. ...And so forth.

Only a few hundred years separate us from the technology for such a
venture.

There is much more.

For instance, supposing in some distant future, one of the colonies
decided to return to earth to explore their "roots". ...Now hold
this thought a moment.

There have been a dozen or so ice ages on earth. ...Each occurring
every 25,000 years or so. Each ice age obliterates all signs of its
underlying civilizations (if any).

What if one of these past civilizations lent thought to what we are
discussing at this moment? ...And sent forth an expedition into
outer space for exploratory purposes. ...And one day, they decided
to return to earth, to "explore their roots". ...And that time were
NOW!

I promise not to use the "U" word.

Jack
