Here's an observation:

Has anyone else noticed the linkage between desert experience and
encountering "strange phenomenon." UFOs have often been sited by people
in the desert and, not surprisingly, often sighted when these people
were on their own.

Doesn't Christian tradition also recount a the story of Christ
"wandering" for 40 days in the desert and wasn't it Paul who had his
great revelation while travelling in the desert?

My own experiences are not without similarity. Here in Alberta we have
a location called Dinosaur Provincial Park. It is a very "otherworldly"
site and I feel very comfortable there. It is quite strange and
certainly beyond one's normal environment. I enjoy it but my wife finds
it a bit "creepy" despite my perceptions of the grandeur.

I have also explored Death Valley, in California during JULY of all
months! I really found the place to be intriguing and it brings forth
images and sensations not found in the mountains nor by the sea nor
while wandering through forested areas. I wonder if there is something
primal in the human spirit - at least in some people which makes the
desert attractive.

T.E. Lawrence, "Lawrence of Arabia," found himself thrown into the Arab
Revolt during WWI and his experiences are very spiritual if his words in
"Seven Pillars of Wisdom" can be counted on as clear depictions of what
was going on inside Lawrence's psyche.

As I say, just an observation and some ruminations but do you think
there is something unique about the fact of being in the desert and
having experiences which are beyond normal. And I know there are those
who could say it's all delusion because people are overcome by heat and
dehydrated so their brain goes into "el-weirdo" mode. I think there is
something MORE to the idea. I had plenty of water with me and wasn't
hallucinating but "something" was going on in the place and I don't just
mean every damn life-form scurrying for shelter to avoid the noon-day
sun! (heh, heh)
