Hey guys, how about these apples? Please note that the police in Florida
do not appear to have this particular problem.

Friday evening, the Fox network local news presented a report on preparations
by the Dallas Police Dept to train its officers re how to deal with Concealed
Handgun License holders after the law takes effect in January.

The report showed the filming of a training video depicting a routine traffic
stop. Upon approaching the stopped car, the traffic officer asked the
motorist if she had a licensed concealed handgun. When the motorist responded
affirmatively, the visibly concerned police officer was shown stepping back
from the car, warning her partner that the driver had a concealed handgun, nd
placing her hand in a ready position on the butt of her service pistol. The
driver was directed to place both hands on the steering wheel. Subsequent
action was not shown. A police department spokesman stated in interview that
he "hoped citizens weren't offended by these actions, but that it was
necessary for the safety of all involved."

Well, I AM offended. The training tape communicated (to me and, I speculate,
to future police trainees) the message that the admission of an otherwise
well-dressed, calm, cooperative citizen that she had a licensed handgun placed
the officers in a potentially threatening situation. I strongly disagree.

In an analogous situation, when I encounter an armed police officer today, I
am not seized with a sudden compulsion to defend myself from an armed
assailant -- because I trust the police, recognize that they are authorized to
carry a gun, and don't leap to the conclusion that their gun is a threat to
me. After January, presentation of my CHL to a police officer will indicate
to him/her that I've passed a criminal background check, passed both written
and range examinations, and basically respected the law sufficiently to spend
considerable time and money to comply with it. It does not make me a threat!!

I know that there are some Dallas residents who populate this forum. I
encourage you all to contact your police department about the attitude it
instills in DPD officers re CHL holders. I'm going to write (and try to
visit) my own police department about that subject. We need to gain and hold
the trust of the officers themselves.

 Flame off .
