Bush stole vote, claims Clinton

PRESIDENT CLINTON has accused his successor, George W Bush, of
effectively stealing the White House by obstructing the counting
of votes in Florida.
As Mr Bush tried to patch up the damage done by the withdrawal of
Linda Chavez as his Secretary of Labour, Mr Clinton made clear
that he doubted the legitimacy of his successor's presidency.
Full of party spirit at a Democratic rally in Chicago to honour
Bill Daley, chairman of Al Gore's unsuccessful campaign, Mr
Clinton said: "I think he [Mr Daley] did a brilliant job in
leading Vice-President Gore to victory.
"They thought the election was over, the Republicans did. By the
time it was over, our candidate had won the popular vote, and the
only way they could win the election was to stop the voting in
Florida."
The comments broke with the tradition that a departing President
goes quietly and they were in stark contrast to the conciliatory
tone adopted by Mr Bush since his victory was confirmed by the US
Supreme Court ruling that ended the recounts in Florida. On
Tuesday, Mr Bush made clear that he was not interested in seeing
Mr Clinton pursued in the courts for offences he might have
committed during the Monica Lewinsky affair.
Ari Fleischer, Mr Bush's spokesman, declined to criticise the
President's remarks, saying only: "There is a tradition in this
country of presidents leaving office with respect for their
successors. I'm certain that President Clinton will want to
follow that."
Republicans in Washington were already reeling from the defeat
of Miss Chavez's nomination. She withdrew her candidacy after it
was disclosed that she had housed an illegal immigrant nine years
ago and might have paid her for housekeeping chores. Other
opponents of the Bush administration, which takes power on
January 20, shifted their attention to the nomination of John
Ashcroft as Attorney-General.
An alliance of civil rights groups and liberal organisations
announced the formation of a group called "Stop Ashcroft", aimed
at highlighting conservative positions taken by him on abortion
and gun control and his opposition to the appointment of a black
judge.
But conservative Republicans, who see Mr Ashcroft, a former
Missouri senator who failed to be re-elected in November, as a
vital representative of their views, were expressing strong
support for his nomination. He will expect more support from the
Bush team than Miss Chavez received.
Other Bush nominees who have been criticised by liberal
opponents are Gale Norton, the prospective Secretary of the
Interior, and Christine Todd Whitman, possible director of the
Environmental Protection Agency.
Pressure groups ranging from black activists protesting at the
Florida vote to environmentalists have threatened to disrupt Mr
Bush's inauguration on January 20, breaking the tradition by
which new presidents are given a unchallenged entry to power.
*Mr Clinton unveiled a statue of Franklin Roosevelt in a
wheelchair yesterday, delivering a victory to advocates of the
rights of the disabled. Roosevelt spent decades trying to
suppress knowledge of his disability though he never walked
unaided after contracting polio in 1921. Until his death in 1945
he was mostly confined to a wheelchair, but was never seen in it
in public.
