                       THE AGE OF UNREASON
Propaganda Replaces Perspicacity in Public Affairs

By Edward Zehr

If you liked the Age of Reason -- the Enlightenment of the
eighteenth century that provided the impetus for the American
Revolution, among other things -- you are certain to loath the
present benighted age, exemplified by intellectuals who don't
know how to think, and politically oriented types who don't even
try. Now that Silly Season is upon us once again we can expect
confirmation of this by way of myriad examples, great and small.

A particularly glaring example was provided by the
Democrat/mainstream media response to George Dubya Bush's
selection of Dick Cheney to be his running mate for the November
election. Astute choice, chortled Mario Cuomo, the last previous
Democrat governor of New York and radio host manque -- Cheney has
the "gravitas" that Dubya so noticeably lacks. Of course, Mario
was merely chanting the canticle of the day from the liberal
Democrat/mainstream media playbook. Other voices could be heard
singing the accompaniment: It occurred to Sen. John Kerry (D-
Mass.) that Dubya really was a bit short on gravitas and
Jonathan Alter of Newsweek commented that Dubya could sure use
the gravitas which Cheney brings to the GOP ticket.

Now "gravitas" is not a word that is on the tip of everybody's
tongue. In fact, I was unable to find it in my first look through
my unabridged, encyclopedic dictionary. Nor was it to be found in
the 12,000-word supplement to Webster's Third New International
Dictionary. Perhaps that is because it is a Latin word. I finally
scrounged it up from the etymology of the word "gravity" in my
unabridged: [
