BARAK: WITHDRAWAL FROM LEBANON VITAL STRATEGIC DECISION
Prime Minister Ehud Barak addressed the upcoming withdrawal from southern
Lebanon on Thursday while visiting the Israel Defense Forces Northern
Command, labeling it "a vital, strategic decision," HA'ARETZ reported.
Barak said that "the withdrawal from Lebanon is not merely an election
promise. There are one thousand and one hundred graves in Israel; one
thousand and one hundred families whose lives were ruined by the
consequences of our presence in Lebanon."
Barak also said that although he is aware that the withdrawal is not risk
free, he believes that in the long run there will be a decreasing of friction.
Meanwhile, according to Israel Radio, KOL YISRAEL, Barak met on Thursday
with South Lebanon Army Commander General Antoine Lahad and assured him that
Israel will do everything within its power to maintain the security and well
being of SLA soldiers.
JORDANIAN TRUCKS PERMITTED TO ENTER PA TERRITORY
Israel and Jordan agreed on Thursday that Jordanian trucks will be
permitted to enter Palestinian Authority territory, HA'ARETZ reported.
Until now, Jordanian truck drivers were required to unload their cargo at
the border, where it was transferred to Palestinian trucks. The new
agreement is an economic gesture towards Jordan in the wake of Jordanian
complaints that unloading cargo curtailed its export to the West Bank. The
agreement was signed by the Israeli Director General of the Ministry of
Transportation and his Jordanian counterpart.
Meanwhile, Israel and Jordan began constructing a new bridge to replace
the Allenby bridge, built over 50 years ago. The Allenby bridge is too
narrow to service the daily crossing of 5,000 people and hundreds of trucks.
The new bridge will be 360 feet long, and will include two traffic lanes in
each direction. It is scheduled to be completed in March 2001. Most of the
financing for the construction, approximately $10 million, will be provided
by the Japanese government.
According to MA'ARIV, Jordan agreed on Thursday to allow Israel to use the
new terminal being built in the Aqaba airport, until construction of the
terminal on the Israeli side of the border in Ein Evrona is completed. The
agreement will allow Israel and Jordan to operate the airport in Aqaba
jointly as soon as 2001.
ISRAEL, ITALY TO SIGN MILITARY AGREEMENT
The Israeli and Italian air forces are slated to sign an agreement
facilitating mutual training, HA'ARETZ reported.
The agreement is the first of its kind signed by the Israel Air Force with
a western country. Security Establishment officials said on Thursday that in
light of the threat to Israel by more distant countries like Iran and Iraq,
the IAF must train over distant, unknown territories.
Last September, six Israeli F-16 and F-15 jets as well as a Hercules
freight plane landed in Italy for a short period to practice navigation. Two
months later, six Italian jets arrived in Israel, practicing emergency
airborne fueling methods along the way.
Meanwhile, according to HATZOFEH, Polish Minister of Security Dr. Yanucz
visited Israel Aircraft Industries and discussed the possibility of having
Polish jets and helicopters improved by the IAI.
IRANIAN MEDIA: ALL JEWS SPY FOR ISRAEL
The conservative media in Iran is sharpening its rhetoric regarding the
trial of the 13 Jews accused of spying for Israel, MA'ARIV reported.
The French newspaper Le Monde quoted on Thursday several harsh comments
made by Iranian officials against Jews and their relationships to Israel.
Iranian television broadcast an interview with a French Muslim intellectual
who said that "all the Zionists around the world will eventually spy for
Israel." The paper claimed that the Iranian media is trying to garner public
support for the possible indictment of the 13 Jews.
Foreign Ministry officials have repeatedly stated that the charges against
the Jews are false and charachterized the improper means practiced in
Iranian prisons as "repugmant and contemptible." They have also said that
the present trial in Iran is "reminiscent of staged trials that
characterized the dark periods of modern history."
Meanwhile, according to Israel Radio, KOL YISRAEL, U.S. Secretary of State
Madeleine Albright said on Thursday that the outcome of the trial will
effect treatment of Iran by the international community.
ECONOMIC BRIEFS
* Israel and India have agreed to accelerate cooperation in high-tech
sectors, focusing on software, telecommunications and information
technology, THE JERUSALEM POST reported. Bilateral trade between the two
countries has more than doubled in the past five years, reaching $1 billion
in 1999.
* French hotel group Accor has signed an agreement with Clal Israel to buy
40 percent of subsidiary Clal Tourism in exchange for
holdings in two joint ventures and $3.6 million in cash, THE JERUSALEM POST
reported. The total value of the deal is approximately $20.8 million. Accor,
France's third-largest hotel operator, said it hopes to expand its holdings
in the region as Middle East conflicts subside.
