Alien Hunters Unveil New Weapon

April 19, 2000 -- By thinking small, a group of radio astronomers hopes to
develop a network of telescopes to begin a full-time search for signs of
extraterrestrial intelligence.
Researchers at the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute -- SETI
-- and the University of California at Berkeley today unveil a prototype
radio telescope that combines the collecting power of small individual
satellite dishes.

The pilot program is expected to pave the way for development of the One
Hectare Telescope, known as the 1HT, which could encompass as many as 500
five-meter dishes linked together. The collecting power of such a network
would surpass the sensitivity of a traditional 100-meter telescope and be
cheaper to build.

SETI research has been conducted around the world for more than 40 years.
Currently, Project Phoenix -- the SETI Institute's ongoing project to search
1,000 sun-like nearby stars for extraterrestrial radio emissions -- has
bi-annual sessions until 2003 with the world's largest radio telescope at
Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico.

The new telescope would give SETI astronomers a permanent home.

The pilot program consists of seven 3.6-meter mesh dishes located near the
University of California Berkeley's Leuschner Observatory. Starting today,
the system will be used to test controls and develop software that will be
needed for the 1HT telescope, said Robert Sanders, with the University of
California at Berkeley.

"It's really intended to shake out the bugs," he said.

The testbed is expected to run for about two years. Development of the $25
million 1HT telescope is targeted to begin in 2002 and be completed in 2005,
said Sanders.

In addition to combing nearby stars for artificially created radio signals,
the 1HT telescope would be used for astronomical research on stars, planets
and other celestial phenomena.
