Al Gore: Second Class Male

"BILL CLINTON IS NOT AN ALPHA MALE." Dr. David Barash spoke these
words clinically, matter-of-factly, as we discussed Vice President
Al Gore on my national radio show. Gore had hired feminist author
Naomi Wolf last January for $180,000 per year -- a consulting fee
far higher than his own salary -- to teach him how to appear
man-like, appeal to women, and create the illusion of being a
leader. Ms. Wolf reportedly advised Mr. Gore to let his "inner
oddness out," and to break out of his "Beta male" inferior status
by publicly confronting the "Alpha male" in the Oval Office, the
man he hopes to succeed, President Clinton.

Barash is an expert at comparing animal and human behaviors. A
Ph.D. in zoology, he is Professor of Psychology at the University
of Washington in Seattle. He is author of more than twenty books,
including Making Sense of Sex and, most recently, The Mammal in the
Mirror. Dr. Barash's articles have appeared in Psychology Today and
Playboy. No wonder he brings deep insight to the strangeness of
President Clinton and his understudy Mr. Gore.

"Alpha-male status is conferred by the other males in a group, not
by the females," explained Dr. Barash. "But Mr. Clinton became
president through the support of females, not males."

The Clinton-Gore ticket won two minority victories -- 43 percent in
1992, 49 percent in 1996. In both cases, Clinton lost the male vote
but carried far more than half the votes cast by single and
divorced (but not married) women. Watching the latest PBS agitprop,
Not For Ourselves Alone, about suffragettes Elizabeth Cady Stanton
and Susan B. Anthony, who could forget that without female votes
Bill Clinton and Al Gore would never have reached the White House?

Researchers have found that when a man perfumed with the pig-mating
pheromone chemical androsterone goes into a bar, he is more
attractive to women. He is also much more likely be punched in the
face by men, the subliminal scent triggering a reaction opposite
that in women.

Bill Clinton seems to elicit a similar response, almost
biochemically attracting the passion of immature women but also the
deep, visceral contempt of mature men. True Alpha males, by
contrast, are respected and followed by other males in their group,
gaining access to females as a byproduct of this status. Females,
the sociobiologists tell us, are genetically predisposed to give
themselves sexually to whomever attains this power status conferred
by the group's males.

Perhaps the clearest indicator of President Clinton's true stature
among males is that whenever, as Commander-in-Chief, he appears
before any unit of the military (he once boasted of "loathing"), he
insists that all soldiers be disarmed or have all bullets removed
from their weapons. No other president in history, Republican or
Democrat, has exhibited such insecurity about being in the presence
of his own loyal warriors. Clinton also had a warning issued to all
soldiers that they will be punished if they voice their feelings
about him to the press. This is not the behavior of a confident
leader of a free society, nor of a true Alpha male.

So why do so many unfulfilled women support Bill Clinton? He is a
seducer, not just individually but also en masse. He is empathetic,
attuned to feelings rather

than ideas. My wife Ellen believes that Clinton's appeal is even
more basic: he is seen by women as someone completely under the
control of a woman, Hillary. He may sneak around behind her back,
but Clinton will use his political power exactly as Hillary
commands. (Alpha males, by the way, always do what they do boldly
and openly. Sneaking moments of cheap oral sex in hidden back
passageways is the behavior of subordinate Beta or even
lower-ranking males. Likewise, Mr. Gore's sneaky and smarmy efforts
to pay Naomi Wolf under the table, keeping her position hidden from
the Federal Election Commission and public, and to prevent her
appearance last Sunday on ABC's This Week were Beta or lower, not
the way of a legitimate leader or Alpha male.)

Author Toni Morrison described Bill Clinton as "America's first
Black President," manifesting "every trope of Blackness," from his
broken home upbringing to his choice of musical instrument, the
saxophone. I suspect that Bill Clinton is also our first "female"
President, manifesting "every trope of womanliness" -- from
emotional seductiveness and quivering lip to submissiveness before
a stronger mate.

Al Gore is not as polarizing as Clinton. Men perceive him as more
or less male, but also as someone who, because of an overbearing
strong father, never quite attained full manhood. To help his
senator father win reelection during the Vietnam War, Gore put on
the uniform, used it as a costume in press photos with his dad, and
then went off to spend months smoking marijuana in a post far away
from combat. Gore seems too eager to please, phony, and
favor-currying in a milquetoast way. On occasion, Gore has admitted
that he had wanted to be a writer and journalist. But his
strong-willed father groomed Prince Albert from infancy to succeed
where the father's ambition fell short, to become President of the
United States. Even now, Gore's eyes reflect the out-of-place
sadness of a person trapped into living somebody else's dreams and
life, not his own. No wonder men tend to perceive Al Gore as only
marginally adequate, and women find him unexciting.

The gender gap has been the Democratic Party's Holy Grail for more
than a decade. In quest of it, Democrats oriented their policies
and propaganda to get half the male vote but win by getting more
than half of female (theoretically 53 percent of voters) ballots.
Every Democrat ad has featured emotional appeals to women, and
every policy has been justified as being "for the children."
Clinton, with help from his allies in the national press, was able
to promote this vision despite evidence that he himself was a sex
harasser, exploiter of women, and, according to at least one
credible accuser, even a rapist. With female votes, the
Clinton-Gore Administration won reelection in 1996 only two years
after House and Senate Democrats lost their majorities. And Naomi
Wolf's advice helped Clinton and Gore achieve this victory; it was
her insight to have Clinton pose frequently with groups of children
and depict himself as America's "good father," a symbolic position
held by George Washington before this slick propagandist
womanipulated it.

But the Democrats' increase in female support has been mirrored by
a loss of male support. One recent poll found that Al Gore, waging
a relentless effort to appeal to women, finally broke a
longstanding tie and inched five points ahead of George W. Bush
among females. But this same poll found that Gore has fallen 21
points behind Bush among male voters. The national media say little
about this gender gap.

This translates to a gender gap between men and women of 26 points
between the two presumptive candidates to be our next president.
The social implications of such a widening rift may be huge and
threaten to shred our social fabric.

We rightly condemn racists such as David Duke for fomenting racial
divisions between whites and blacks in our politics, recognizing
that it promotes hatred and the Balkanizing of America. Is it any
different when the Democratic Party plays the "sex card" and
foments sexual differences between men and women, insulting male
values and institutions to win the votes of women? Do we really
want elections decided in a battle of the sexes between the "male"
political party and the "female" party? When one such party wins
with these divide-and-conquer politics, what compromise or common
ground can be reached with the opposition? Can't we all just get
along?

Scientists have discovered that in one high primate species,
females are dominant. This happens among Bonobo, or pygmy,
chimpanzees, our "closest relatives," with DNA almost 99 percent
identical to that of humans. In Bonobo groups, the females gang up
on and attack any assertive male. Civil order comes through making
love, not war. Bonobos engage in sexual intercourse several times
each day, using sex with one and all instead of grooming to achieve
social bonding, relieve social tensions, and remain peaceful. Young
male Bonobos engage in intercourse with their mothers and other
group females from infancy. Come to think of it, it's rather like
the society Naomi Wolf advocates in her latest book Promiscuities
and other writings. She has called for teaching our young children
sexual-gratification techniques in public schools, much as former
Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders was fired for doing prior to the
Monica Lewinsky scandal. Wolf wants to do this "for the children"
and for a political party we could call "Bonobocrats."

(Two other things should be noted about feminist Bonobo
chimpanzees. They are among the most intelligent of animals, even
sharing learned social rituals in a way that some scientists label
"culture." And in their native habitat, Bonobos are on the brink of
extinction, their intelligence and "culture" having failed to give
them the ability to adapt to a changing world.)

We have created an oddly similar situation in America's inner
cities. The typical household there consists of an unwed mother and
her children. Roughly 70 percent of children there are born to
single mothers. The role of father as provider belongs to the
government, which sends welfare checks and provides public housing.
Young men born to such mothers grow up with no role, except as an
occasional sperm donor to make more babies and bolster the "Great
White Father in Washington" welfare checks. These young men grow up
with no male role models except drug pushers, pimps, poverty pimps
like Jesse Jackson, and politicians like Bill Clinton who act as if
every woman getting a government check is part of their personal
harem.

And the Democratic Party feeds, vulture-like, on this social
carnage and carnality.

It targets its appeal on inner-city mothers dependent on welfare
and on suburban divorcees who want the welfare state to be there as
a husband substitute. Many of these suburban women, while still
married, voted for Clinton-Gore, not understanding that their loud
support for Clinton was a signal to their own husbands and sons
that adultery is acceptable behavior.

In Scotland, the welfare state has produced a similar
infantilization and emasculation that de-moralizes society. The
October 31 London Sunday Times reported that the UK Men's Movement
has proposed compulsory school courses on manhood to teach Scottish
boys about integrity and heroism and provide a rite of passage to
adult status. This might work better for Al Gore than paying
feminist Naomi Wolf $15,000 a month to teach him how to pretend to
be a man.

Al Gore appears destined always to be a Second Class Male. His
willingness to get an image makeover from Wolf, to be remolded like
the plastic person he is, merely confirms the judgment of columnist
Richard Cohen that "Gore is beta all the way." As Cohen wrote in
the November 2 Washington Post, "Do not be surprised if, at some
Rose Garden event, [Gore] bares his teeth at Clinton or -- in a
suit selected by Wolf -- sniffs him." Gore may learn to act like a
dog, but he will never acquire animal magnetism. Gore, like a good
Beta, nowadays tells people that he is an "underdog," as well as
under Wolf.

"Al Gore is an `Omega male'," says House Majority Leader Dick Armey
(R.-Texas), referring to the doomsday final letter of the Greek
alphabet. Indeed, if the Democrats are now America's "female"
party, how much longer will its women voters be content to have
patronizing drone males as their candidates? Hillary, the closest
thing to an Alpha male in the Clinton White House, has quietly
taken the legal steps that qualify her as a Presidential candidate
in Y2K.

LAST SEPTEMBER, former Arkansas bodyguard Larry Patterson described
Governor and Mrs. Clinton's frequent use of anti-Semitic epithets
when they quarreled. Now former Clinton tactical wizard Dick
Morris, on Fox News Channel's Hannity & Colmes, relates that
Hillary frequently teased him about eating pork. Morris, Jewish by
birth, tells that during a heated discussion about how much he was
to be paid, Hillary blurted out angrily: "That's all you people
care about is money!"

When Reform Party candidate Ross Perot made a "you people"
reference before a black group, the media tarred and feathered him
for it. Pundits have called Pat Buchanan an anti-Semite, citing as
evidence similar and even milder statements. The national media
seem unwilling to raise the question whether Hillary secretly deep
down inside hates Jews.

The First Lady was unavailable for comment. She has been away on a
taxpayer-funded campaign tour of Israel. Those who run for U.S.
Senate in New York are expected to tour the "Three I's," Ireland,
Italy, and Israel.

ONE ALPHA MALE DEMOCRAT emerged on the national scene in the
November 2 elections. In San Francisco, write-in white candidate
Tom Ammiano came in second and in mid-December will face incumbent
African-American Mayor Willy Brown in a run-off.

Ammiano is president of the Board of Supervisors in the Duchy of
San Francisco. A stand-up comedian, a stand-up gay activist, and
inspiration for thousands of Castro District followers known as
"Tom Boys," Ammiano advocates a host of radical changes in
government policy that make ultraliberal Mayor Brown seem almost
moderate.

Ammiano wants insurance companies to foot the $10,000-$30,000 bill
for the sex-change operation of any city employee desiring one.
(And, doubtless, to pay for related risks such as the Oklahoma man
in the midst of a sex change who, in a November 3 court appearance,
claimed that "gender confusion" caused him to shoot a man in a fit
of road rage. Should it worry us that Al Gore appears to have deep
self-doubt resembling "gender confusion," and a desire to be at one
with female yearnings, that has prompted his costly clinging to
Naomi Wolf?)

Ammiano reportedly wants a surtax on the "rich" to confiscate any
income they make above $150,000 per year (e.g., Naomi Wolf).

Ammiano reportedly wants to require all parents to send their
children to public schools. He effectively would close private and
parochial schools, and make government schools a compulsory
monopoly where his values will be taught.

Tom Ammiano, in other words, may be the only honest Democrat
politician running for high office in America today. What Bill and
Hillary, Al and Bill, and other liberal Democrats are working to
impose by stealth and deception, Ammiano advocates openly. Will Al
Gore embrace him? In private, certainly. Will Ammiano win? In San
Francisco, he'll come in first. Mayor Ammiano may soon replace Wolf
as Gore's image-bending left-hand man. Come what may, to see what
Democrats look like with their disguises off, look at Tom Ammiano.

VETERAN DEMOCRAT POLLSTER Pat Caddell told Chris Matthews on
MSNBC/CNBC's Hardball that Bill Clinton might "subconsciously" want
Al Gore to lose in the 2000 election. If Gore wins, Clinton
plummets from Alpha to Omega dog status in American politics, said
Caddell. But if Gore loses, then as its most recent president Bill
Clinton remains titular head of the Democratic Party. It's a
dog-eat-dog world.
