 ON WAR AND PEACE

 "The story of the human race," wrote Winston Churchill, "is war."
 Churchill, an historian as well as a statesman, knew whereof he spoke.

  A monumental study of war was made by Pitrim Sorokin, one of the
 profoundest students of Western civilization.  Sorokin, once chairman of the
 department of sociology at Harvard University, investigated all the known
 wars of Greece and Rome, as well as those of Western Europe from the year
 500 before the common era to 1925.  This involved examination of some 967
 important wars from the standpoint of duration, size of armies, and
 casualties.

  A more recent study indicates that between 1945 and 1978 there were not
 more than twenty-six days in which there was no war of some kind somewhere
 in the world.  About twelve wars were being fought on an "average" day.

  There are some ugly conclusions to be drawn from this data.  Clearly, the
 norm of international relations is not peace but war.  Indeed, the
 occurrence of 1,000 wars during the last 2,500 years indicates that "peace" 
is little more than a preparation for war.  Which means that peace treaties
 are worthless, to say the least.

 This is exactly the conclusion of Lawrence Beilenson's book THE TREATY TRAP
 (1969).  After studying every peace treaty going back to early Roman times,
 Beilenson concludes that treaties are made to be broken.  In fact, he shows
 that treaties for guaranteeing the territorial integrity of a nation are
 useless to the guaranteed nation, and worse than useless insofar as they
 engender a false sense of security.  Such treaties can only benefit nations
 governed by rulers intending to violate them whenever expedient.

  For Israel, the lessons of this extensive research into the history of war
 and peace are of vital importance, given her proximity to militant Arab
 dictatorships.  First, there is no such thing as a "peace process," except
 for fools and scoundrels.  Maj. General David Ivri (res.), Director General
 of the Defense Ministry, warned on April 13, 1992:  "The peace with Egypt is
 not peace.  It is actually a cease-fire that has continued for 15 years."
 Only last year General (res.) Matan Vilnai warned that the massive growth of
 the Egyptian army is "Israel's most dangerous enemy"

 A second lesson is this:  if you want peace, be prepared for war; if you
 want war, make concessions for peace.  This unpleasant wisdom rubs against
 the principles and passions of democratic societies.  Democracies are
 naturally inclined to peace.  Because democratic government is based on the
 primacy of persuasion or consent, it will not pursue, in principle, a
 foreign policy based on coercion or conquest.  Pacifism thrives only in
 democracies.

 Also conducive to pacifism is the democratic principle of equality.
 Equality maximizes social and economic mobility.  This encourages
 competition and acquisitiveness, along with commerce and industry magnified
 by science and technology.  Democratic societies admire not the martial
 virtues so much as success in business.  Hence democracies are preoccupied
 with money-making, with the desire for material goods and comfort.  Which
 means that, along with its blessings, democratic equality encourages
 self-indulgence rather than the self-sacrifice and public spiritedness
 required if a nation is to be prepared for war.

 Now, given their lust for ease and comfort, democracies incline not only to
 peace but to appeasement.  To be sure, peace--PROPERLY UNDERSTOOD--is a
 basic Jewish value.  But the desire for peace can have base as well as noble
 motives.  So vulgar is the desire for peace by certain politicians that they
 would have Israel make gratuitous concessions not only to Arab tyrannies,
 but to a petty terrorist organization like the PLO!  HONOR IS ONE OF THE
 FIRST CASUALTIES OF DEMOCRATIC SOCIETIES.

 ANOTHER CASUALTY IS STEADFAST CONFIDENCE IN THE JUSTICE OF ONE'S CAUSE.
 Recall how once-victorious democracies appeased Hitler and betrayed
 democratic Czechoslovakia.  It was with these democratic infirmities in mind
 that Churchill wrote in THE GATHERING STORM:

 "It is my purpose ... to show how easily the tragedy of the Second World War
 could have been prevented; how the malice of the wicked was reinforced by
 the weakness of the virtuous; how the structure and habits of democratic
 states ... lack those elements of persistence and conviction which alone
 give security to humble masses; how even in matters of self-preservation, no
 policy is pursued for even ten or fifteen years at a time.  We shall see how
 counsels of prudence and restraint may become the prime agents of mortal
 danger; how the middle course adopted from desires for safety and a quiet
 life may be found to lead direct to the bull's-eye of disaster."

TOO DANGEROUS TO BE SAFE

Today the price of patriotism is smear and character assassination. The 
greatest issue on earth involves the battle of Christian civilization against 
its enemies. To simplify: Christ versus the anti-Christ. At the moment the 
chief instrument of the anti-Christ is Communism. A study of this satanic 
intrigue is as complex as the study of cancer, geology or astronomy. It isn't 
just the simple analysis of a political theory pitted against our Christian 
traditions and the principles which go to make up the foundation of our 
Constitutional Republic. The chief complexity in Communism lies in the fact 
that its visible front and its stated purposes constitute a very small 
percentage of its projects, its activities and its propaganda.

It is relatively simple and almost easy to be a simple-minded anti-Communist. 
Politicians, clergymen, educators and public figures in general are usually 
happy to make a public statement professing their antipathy for Communism as 
such. The real trouble, begins when a student of Communism dedicated to its 
opposition goes beneath the surface deep enough to discover motivations and 
thorough enough to identify deceptive front activities.

It is safe to say that every intelligent and effective foe of Communism is 
eventually smeared, ridiculed and abused. Frequently he suffers the ultimate 
in character assassination.

When I first became alerted to the menace of Communism, I thought it would be 
a rather simple formula to expose its destructive equations and warn 
high-principled Americans concerning its menacing potentialities. I thought 
that all I needed to do was enlighten an unenlightened public and the 
indignation of reaction would naturally solve the problem. I was green and 
naive, and although cosmopolitan and sophisticated in my professional 
associations I soon realized that as a fighter of Communism, I was provincial 
and uninitiated.

I discovered a new strata of personalities which did not appear on the 
surface. They were later identified by those of us who have led in this 
battle against Bolshevism as the fraternity of anti-antiCommunists. The 
members of this fraternity never support Communism. They are a wrecking crew. 
They are, figuratively speaking, 'Murder, Inc.' They concentrate on the 
destruction and annihilation of individuals who are effective foes of the 
Communist menace. They don't make speeches or write editorials or television 
comment in support of Communism. They merely attack the Joe McCarthys, the 
Gerald L. K. Smiths and the Francis Walters.

In the days of my naivete these people never answered my arguments against 
Communism. They merely branded me as a rabble-rouser, and an alarmist, and 
when they ran out of adjectives, they would call me a Fascist. For years the 
smear definition of an effective foe of Communist was Fascist, though our 
fraternity of patriots has opposed Fascism even when it takes on the 
bureaucratic formation of a New Deal dictatorship.

Now that I have become a mature student of the Communist menace (to use the 
paradox) I observe with 'sad amusement' the activities of people who think 
they can fight this fight without being the victims of smear or character 
assassination. Even Senator Joseph McCarthy confided in mutual friends by 
saying: "I am going to fight this fight without getting smeared as Gerald L. 
K. Smith and others have been smeared."

As time passed I could not be satisfied with an understanding of the symptoms 
of Communism and the fruits of Communism. I was determined to enlighten 
myself concerning its motivations, its background personalities, its 
underwriters and its promoters. It came as a shock to me when I discovered 
that Communism from Marx to Khrushchev has been largely a Jewish project. I 
was soon given to understand that it was even dangerous to think this, let 
alone say it and write it, but having been raised by a Christian father and 
mother to have a high respect for both intelligence and courage, I proceeded 
to tell the world what I had learned, and as a result I became the smeared 
victim of the highly organized Jewish character assassination machine. They 
vowed that they would drive me into the sewers, veto my message in every 
journal and give me the silent treatment in the realm of news which would 
make the public think I was indeed dead and buried.

One Jewish journalist of great prominence called on me in New York City and 
said: "Gerald, we are going to smear you, then give you the silent treatment 
and annihilate you as a public figure. This will be done in such a way that 
whenever a man raises his voice in criticism of Jewry, we can point to you 
and say, 'See what we did to Gerald Smith. That is what we will do to you.' "

Because of the circumstance described above, patriots of character and 
intelligence have attempted to fight Communism in a conventional manner 
without discussing the Jewish question. The fact remains, however, that the 
organized Jew with some notable individual exceptions has been the natural 
protector and defender of Christ-hating Communism. Therefore, effective 
enemies of Communism who have threatened its existence and expansion have in 
many instances been smeared as viciously as if they had stood completely at 
my side, or if they had been contributing editors to THE CROSS AND THE FLAG. 
They learned that if they struck the child (Communism) they would be attacked 
by the mother (organized Jewry).

Here are some examples of personalities and organizations who have discovered 
that fighting Communism is too dangerous to be safe:

1. Martin Dies, the first chairman of the Un-American Activities Committee. 
Exposed Communism effectively and was smeared viciously.

2. Congressman John Rankin. Helped launch the campaign to expose Communist 
treason in the film colony and elsewhere, and although a man of honor and 
Christian character he was represented by the 'assassination gang' as a 
renegade and a dangerous man.

3. Congressman J. Parnell Thomas was chairman of the Un-American Activities 
Committee and on a frame-up was sentenced to Federal Prison even though he at 
one time had issued a public criticism of me because of my alleged 
anti-Semitism. Even his patronage of the Jews did not save him. It was 
believed that he barely escaped death by poison on one occasion when he was 
enroute to Panama to investigate the Red menace in the Canal zone.

4. Charles A. Lindbergh was America's hero, and President Roosevelt in 
cooperation with organized Jewry used all the instruments of communication 
and official power to smear and belittle this great man.

5. Senator Joseph McCaxthy issued numerous statements to the effect that he 
proposed to fight Communism without introducing the Jewish question and he 
leaned over backwards in his attempt to keep faith with this commitment, but 
he was hated by the Jews and smeared by the Jews as viciously as if his name 
had been Gerald L. K. Smith.

6. As this goes to press cartoons and smear articles are being run all over 
the Ujaited States in a campaign against what is known as the John Birch 
Society. This association of men and women of character and substance is 
headed by a citizen above reproach by the name of Robert Welch. By no stretch 
of the imagination can it be said that Robert Welch is an anti-Semite or in 
any way associated with those of us who are dubbed anti-Semites, but Mr. 
Welch and his great organization are being smeared and abused as viciously as 
if they had been organized under my direction. Mr. Welch and his organization 
are victims of 'Murder, Inc.' a gang of sophisticates elected to smear and 
assassinate the character of the effective foes of Communism.

Observation: The reader should be reminded that 'Murder, Inc.,' (my name for 
the character assassins who smear patriots), is not made up of the 
wire-whiskered and dirty faced revolutionaries who rove the streets and riot 
in public places. This gang of academic, intellectual and propaganda 
cut-throats have their representatives in the great metropolitan newspapers, 
the television networks, the radio stations, the cultural organizations, the 
educational insitutions and certain pulpits.

To illustrate: Bishop James A. Pike o the Episcopal Church of San Francisco, 
California recently warned the Nation that a new 'wave of 'McCarthyism' is 
rising in America, headed by such men as Fulton Lewis, Jr, Gerald L. K. 
Smith, William F. Buckley, (editor of the NATIONAL REVIEW, a right wing 
journal) and Congressman Francis Walter.

7. For a while it seemed that the great J. Edgar Hoover was above and beyond 
the reach of 'Murder, Inc.,' but shortly before this magazine went to press 
rumors were beginning to leak out concerning an attempt to get Mr. Hoover 
fired. The publisher of the NEW YORK DAILY POST launched a campaign to smear 
Hoover, but it failed, and thank God he continues to hold the line. He has so 
meticulously avoided anything that would look like anti-Semitism so-called 
that alert patriots who are students of the subject have been inclined to be 
critical of Mr. Hoover. I have refused to encourage these criticisms and 
although Mr. Hoover may not be in agreement with me on some of the more 
controversial viewpoints held by me, I am not going to give aid and comfort 
to the Communists or 'Murder, Inc.' in their attempt to liquidate the public 
authority of this great citizen.

I could name 100 men and women of position and prominence who thought they 
could fight Communism on a 'respectable' basis and be praised and honored by 
conventional society.

As long as they remained simple and naive and fundamentally ineffective, 
nothing much happened; but when they became effective and were looked upon by 
the underground conspirators as a threat to the expansion and existence of 
the Communist menace, they became victims of the pitch throwers, the poison 
dart gang and 'Murder, Inc.'

Added to those listed above we have the following names of great citizens who 
became the victims of a wide variety of reprisals, because they dared stand 
foursquare against Communism in all of its ramifications: (a) General Douglas 
MacArthur; (2) Father Charles E. Coughlin; (c) Dean Manion; (d) Admiral John 
Crommelin; (e) General George Van Horn Moseley; (f) Senator Jack B. Tenney; 
(g) Colonel John Beaty; (h) Benjamin Freedman; (i)Merwin K. Hart; (j) Fulton 
Lewis, Jr. (At one time Mr. Lewis even tried to buy safety by making a public 
attack on me, but the smear against him was not relaxed because he has been 
an effective foe of Communism.) ; (k) Joseph P. Kamp; (l) Senator James 0. 
Eastland; (m) Congressman Francis Walter; (n) Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek; 
(o) Syngman Rhee.

Patriots should not labor under any illusions or delusions. In the battle for 
the possession of things and for the mastery of minds the biggest prize on 
earth constitutes the areas of influence summarized by this noble thing we 
refer to as Christian civilization. The modern enemies of Christ hate this 
entity with as much burning venom in their souls as did His crucifiers 2,000 
years ago. They are determined that Christ shall be crucified and buried with 
all annihilating permanency, and they have chosen Communism and Zionism as 
the instruments for His annihilation.

Anyone who pits himself against one or both of these Satanic forces will be 
smeared, ridiculed and abused. In these days for one to be a defender of 
Christian tradition as it relates to our Nation and our world involving our 
culture and our governments - for one to be a defender of these dynamic 
values is to invite the most vicious and the most dangerous opposition 
mankind can know. To summarize, it is accurate to say: Real patriotism is too 
dangerous to be safe, but oh, what a magnificent danger, what a glorious risk 
and what an inspiring hazard. As we resist treason, as we stand up against 
the anti-Christ, as we rededicate ourselves to THE CROSS AND THE FLAG, let us 
never forget that the reward of resistance is the sweetest and most beautiful 
morsel that the human soul can taste or absorb. It is defined in the words of 
the Scriptures. After narrating Christ's resistance to the devil, the 
Scripture says: "And angels came and ministered unto Him."
