Having had both dogs and hawks I can say that they demonstrate different
forms of intelligence. A hawk is very mathematical and visually oriented.
One can see them literally calculate a flight path in a wind. Show them
a picture of an owl or a different species of hawk and they will peck
it right on the neck. They are more like us than dogs in this way,
but dogs are more like us in others (including emotions). Giving
these facts I'm not certain if we can be confident about the "intelligence"
of dolphins. One really does not know what kind of signal processing
is going on in those brains. For example someday we might map a
picture of a galaxy in audio (all digital data is convertable (though
not necessarily in a useful way) from one form to another) and they
might discover and produce patterns that we didn't find.

3 of many possibilities.3 of many possibilities.3 of many possibilities.
1. our brains are more efficient.
2. brain is optimized (this is expensive stuff to mantain) at a lower
intelligence (or at least it was).
3. some nasty ancestor of ours wiped them out.
