What is the present status of research on subliminal perception?
What are the conditions required for clean research to determine if
subliminal auditory cueing might have an effect in decision making,
as in selecting one among several alternatives with better than
chance success?
What are the limits of putative subliminal perception -- how faint a
sound can still be effective?
As an example, suppose that some speech cue was given, but attenuated
by insulation and distance so that about 11db actually reaches the
human subject, who is in an environment with a background noise with
broadband frequency spectrum of about 40db. This means that the cue
would not be consciously audible, but the question is whether it could
have a subliminal effect that could yield better than chance guessing.
Those researching auditory subliminal perception claim effects in a
range including a S-N ratio of -35 db. I believe this means (assuming
the claim is true) that the 31 db difference between the transmitted
cue and the background puts the example in the "possible" range for
subliminal transmission, but I don't have the expertise to critique the
calculations, or the subliminal perception claims, or to estimate the
advantage over chance performance. I'd appreciate comments.
