Based upon my experiences, people post through anon.penet.fi because
they have no direct posting access to this newsgroup, and they have
no clue about the legitimate mail-to-news gateways (such as
cs.utexas.edu or decwrl.dec.com). Perhaps some mention of posting
through those services can be put into the FAQ.

One important thing to consider is that posting through anon.penet.fi
will lead to a lack of responses, simply out of a desire of some
people not to be saddled with an ID on that system.

there are people in this world who hide from others on the
net by using anon-servers. i hid, and to some extent,
still do hide from my exhusband and parents, for three
months now. in a sense, this account is anon, because my
registration records are closed to the public, and my name
and location are not on them. for the past three months
i used a completely anon account to hide from these people,
until i was sure it was safe to be a little more visible.
some people are still hiding. to give a reason as to why
they hide behind an anon-server, can sometimes identify
them to the people they hide from. yes, there is alot of
garbage from anon-servers, but there are also alot of
people who are honest and it is the only way they can be
out in public without fearing for their safety. the names
are registered with the anon-server. if someone bothers
you from one of them, take it up with the administration
and they will block furthur use from that account. to
view everyone from an anon-server with distrust can shut
you off from some very special people. try a little
patience with these people unless it is obviously just
spammage.

This is, on the whole, a friendly group. However, due to the
subject matter and the problem of misinterpretation of massage
as purely a sexual matter, we get a lot of inappropriate
anon postings. This has tended to give the regular posters
a bad attitude to anon postings in general. A post which would
be read as sincere from a normal poster, is often viewed
as flamebait or inappropriate from an anon server. Basically
I think it comes down to trust. If you're willing to put
your username to a post, we'll give you the benefit of the
doubt as to your sincerity. If you feel you have to hide
behind the anon server, then your sincerity is in severe
doubt. I don't think any of us can understand why anyone
would feel compelled to use the anon server for posting
here if they just wish to discuss massage in an open
environment with the right attitude (that massage is
sensual, and can be sexual, but that these are small parts
of the whole experience). Therefore, if you have a good
reason for posting anonymously, then stating this in your
posts is the only way we might still give you the benefit
of the doubt.

(BTW, in certain circumstances I am in favour of the anon
server - the abuse.recovery group for instance, or the
lgb groups, where knowledge of your posting might lead
to unpleasantness in the real world, but posting
appropriately to alt.backrubs is unlikely to lead to such
things, so you need to justify it.)
