The best way is to give a back rub, or start out with a foot rub to them.
I care take a lot, so I can feel guilty just asking for something and
not offer something at the same time. It really does help me if I first
give one to a friend first, and then they are relaxed, and I always get
a much better back rub anyway.
: Tips on backrubs: if you start with the base of the neck it can often
: encourage the person to loosen up their entire body
Or another spot is to start in the stomach, and than can help the person
to loosen up, and center the person, and free up the digestion tract.
The same will hold true if you start on the feet, and try to use
some reflexology. You can prework the entire body in the foot, and then
go and do the entire body. You can really get in and do deep work
because the body can be so relaxed at theat point.

: Just how do you massage the stomach? I'd like to learn about

The main thing to remember about the abdomen is to work clockwise,
so you follow the direction of flow in the gut (similar reasoning
to the twoards heart advice). I've usually found the stomach is a
very sensitive area to massage, so I leave it until well into a
massage if I'm going to do it. Heavy pressure on the stomach is not
generally a good idea, sicne it does little except make the patient
twist the spine. The only point I use heavy pressure on is just above
left high protrusion of the pelvis (oh, for a Gray's in the office).
which is the end-point of the clockwise massage. Point the fingers
stiffly and press down about an inch to two inches depending on the
patients' size, then vibrate the wrist back and forth leaving the
fingers pressed into the same spot. This helps, following general
abdominal massage) to keep the bowels working.
