WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Clinton will kick off the AmeriCorps
national service program by administering an oath to 15,000 young
people on the White House lawn Monday.

The youths, expected to number 20,000 within a year, will serve
at least a year in programs to promote safety, education, health and
environmental protection. Each will be paid a minimum-wage stipend
and get education vouchers of $5,000 a year for up to two years.

"It's going to represent a great new adventure to reclaim our
country from the twin diseases of apathy and despair," said Eli
Segal, chief executive officer of the Corporation for National
Service.

On Sunday, the president will attend a prayer service at the
Army's Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland to showcase the base's
AmeriCorps program there.

He will swear in hundreds of youth on the White House lawn Monday
and thousands more around the country by satellite. Over the next
three years, 100,000 people are expected to participate.

AmeriCorps has run pilot summer programs the last two years.
