Hmmmmm. This just in from a known good source:
RE: the base in Arizona and Amtrak derailment:
The location for covert helicopter operations in Arizona is Pinal
Airpark, which is known to airline pilots as "Marana." Marana is the
closest town. In Marana, which is in the middle of nowhere, the
motels charge $90.00 @ night and are always full of young, clean cut,
military type males. Marana is where many of the airlines store their
unused jets in dry storage.
Pinal is the home of Evergreen Air's aviation center. They modify and
upgrade aircraft--large and small. They also are big in helicopters.
Last year they were finishing up a contract to upgrade and pant
hundreds of UH-1 Hueys. Most of these had been completed over a three
year period, and most had come out of the strategic reserve fleet in
Davis-Monthan, which is just south of Tuscon. Marana is just north on
the highway that runs to Phoenix.
Guess what color they painted the helicopters?
You got it. And there are no visible id numbers.
Most went out to closed down military bases around the country, but
several were kept there. Not sure where they are now, but imagine a
few are in hangars there.
The flight at night from Marana would be child's play. Simply pick up
the VOR north of Pinal, follow the radial until you intersect Highway
8, follow it west until Gila Bend, turn north up the canyon and you
get to the exact spot where the train was derailed. Total flight time
for a Huey: 1:15 if in a hurry, 1:40 if taking it slow.
