I've set up an FTP site as part of my NETCOM account. You should be
able to log in via ANONYMOUS FTP to FTP.NETCOM.COM.

When you log in you should be in the FTP directory.

CD pub/jm/jmcadams should get you to my subdirectory.

There are two different modes for FTP transfer of files: ASCII and BINARY.

Graphic images (.JPG and .GIF) must be gotten with a BINARY transfer.
Text files (.TXT) need to be gotten with an ASCII transfer. Using a
binary transfer on text files will get all the information, but cause
problems with erratic text wrapping. Using an ASCII transfer to get
graphic images will produce garbage.

The following files are available:

DEALEY PLAZA WITNESSES AND PHOTOS

** Two graphics, one showing Louis Witt's umbrella being opened before
the House Select Committee on Assassinations, to the general merriment
of all assembled. The second shows the Umbrella Man's umbrella in the
Zapruder film in Dealey Plaza. Both of these images are video captures
from the NOVA documentary. They are UMBRELL1.JPG and UMBRELL2.JPG.
Some conspiratorialists claim that the umbrellas are different, having
a different number of spokes. Decide for yourself.

** What was the point of the umbrella in Dealey Plaza? Apparently it
was an attempt to heckle Kennedy with a reminder of the appeasment
policies of British Prime Minister Nevill Chamberlain, whose weak posture
toward Hitler was supported by Kennedy's father. UMBRELLA.GIF in a
political cartoon connecting the umbrella (Chamberlain's trademark) with
weakness toward Naziism.

** One of the ongoing mysteries of Dealey Plaza is the origin of the
fragment that hit James Tague. Three graphics images, all rendered
Autocad drawings, test two scenarios. First is Posner's theory that a
shot at about Zapruder frame 160 was deflected off a branch of the
Live Oak in front of the Depository and hit the curb in front of
Tague. The other theory is that a fragment of the head shot hit
Tague. TAGUE1.GIF, TAGUE2.GIF, and TAGUE3.GIF show the trajectories
involved.

** TAGUE4.GIF deals with the same issue, but this time the drawing is
from conspiracy author Josiah Thompson. The diagram, drawn on a map
of Dealey Plaza, shows the path a fragment from the head shot would
have to have taken to hit Tague.

Don't forget to use a *binary* transfer to get them.

** Abraham Zapruder took the most famous piece of amateur motion
picture film in history. His film does not show the back of Kennedy's
head exploding, but rather the top, right, and front. Of course, some
conspiratorialists claim the Zapruder film has been tampered with.
ZAP.GIF is a video frame, from WFAA-TV, of Zapruder's interview with
Jay Watson. He here shows where he saw Kennedy's head explode.

** When dealing with the Single Bullet Theory, conspiracy works
always have Connally seated directly in front of Kennedy, at the same
height, and facing forward. You've seen Kevin Costner do this sort of
thing. SBT1.GIF is James Altgen's photo of the limo rounding the
corner of Main and Houston. Check out the relative heights of Kennedy
and Connally. SBT2.GIF is a rendered CAD drawing showing a top view
of Kennedy and Connally in the limo about the time of the Single
Bullet hit. Note the relative positions and orientations of their
torsos. SBT2.GIF is from Paul Burke on the Compuserve JFK Forum, and
is uploaded by permission.

** A picture rarely seen before, SBT3.JPG is a photo of the limo made
after it was returned to Washington. The right-side door is wide
open, and you can plainly see the relative heights of Kennedy's seat
and Connally's seat. Uploaded by Bob Artwohl to Compuserve, and
uploaded here by permission.

Again, got to be a BINARY transfer for .GIF images, or you get garbage.

** Roger Craig is the guy featured in lots of conspiracy books. You
remember: he saw Oswald run from the TSBD and get in a Rambler on Elm
Street, supposedly belonging to Mrs. Paine, a few minutes after the
assassination. He saw lots of other suspicious stuff too. RAMBLER.TXT
is David Perry's investigation into the Craig story. Was it really
a Rambler? Was it really Mrs. Paine's? Did a photo really show up
years later to vindicate Craig? An excellent adjunct to viewing
Mark Lane's video TWO MEN IN DALLAS.

** Seymour Weitzman, the officer who first saw Oswald's behind some
boxes on the 6th floor of the Texas School Book Depository, said it
was a Mauser, and several other officers repeated this statement.
Before the Warren Commission, Weitzman said that "in a glance" the gun
looked like a Mauser. RIFLE1.JPG, taken from SIX SECONDS IN DALLAS,
is a photo that shows Oswald's Mannlicher-Carcano beside a Mauser. So
you be the judge: could someone "in a glance" mistake one rifle for
the other?

** Conspiracy authors often cite the negative paraffin test result from
Oswald's cheek as evidence that he did not shoot Kennedy. Paraffin tests
may yield false positives, they say, but they don't produce false
negatives. PTEST.TXT is a passage from a standard forensics text on this
issue.

** The "acoustic evidence" that supposedly showed at least four shots
fired during the assassination was quickly debunked by the National
Academy of Sciences. An element in the debunking was the discovery, by
Steve Barber, of the voice of Sheriff Decker saying "hold everything"
during the time of the "shots" on the police dictabelt. This
established that the "shots" were fired about a minute after the
assassination, and could not have been shots. Defenders of the "acoustic
evidence" claimed that the needle of the Dictaphone may have skipped and
overlaid the Decker statement over the real assassination shots.
SKIP.TXT recounts the NAS examination of this issue.

** Among the Dealey Plaza witnesses, Marilyn Sitzman was superbly
positioned to see what was going on. Standing on the same pedestal
with Abraham Zapruder (and helping steady him), she was only a few
yards from the supposed position of the Grassy Knoll shooter. She saw
Kennedy hit in the head, and she turned to look in the direction of
the Stockade Fence after the head shot. Although she did not testify
before the Warren Commission, SITZMAN.TXT is a transcript of her
interview with author Josiah Thompson.

** Jackie Kennedy is widely quoted in assassination books as a witness who
claimed to have seen a wound on the back of Kennedy's head. JACKIE.TXT
gives her account of the terror of Dealey Plaza, as told to Theodore
White. It provides an interesting supplement to her WC testimony.

NEW ORLEANS, AND THE GARRISON INVESTIGATION

** ANDREWS.TXT is an account, abstracted from Kirkwood's AMERICAN
GROTESQUE, of the ever-changing testimony of Dean Andrews, sleazy
New Orleans lawyer.

** Conspiracy books routinely claim that Oswald had an office at 544
Camp Street in New Orleans, and that this was the "same address"
occupied by Guy Bannister's detective agency. This, supposedly, is
evidence tying Oswald to Bannister, Ferrie, and the anti-Castro
Cubans. 544CAMP.TXT is a research report done for the HSCA by Gaeton
Fonzi and Patricia Orr, outlining the evidence on Oswald and 544 Camp.

** Jim Garrison, the controversial DA who brought Clay Shaw to trial
for killing President Kennedy, had a skill that has been seldom noted.
He was a cryptographer! This passage, from Epstein's COUNTERPLOT
shows how he applied his cryptographic abilities to the prosecution of
Shaw. It's GARRISN1.TXT.

** It is often claimed that Clay Shaw admitted to using the "Clay
Bertrand" alias when he signed a fingerprint card during his booking
in New Orleans. The card, listing the alias, was produced by the
Garrison prosecution. Did Shaw admit to the alias by signing the
card? SHAWBOOK.TXT is and account (taken from AMERICAN GROTESQUE) of
the prosecution's attempt to have the card entered into evidence in
the Shaw trial. Did Officer Habighorst tell the truth?

** Jim Garrison charged that Clay Shaw was a CIA agent. Conspiracy
buffs have claimed that this charge is supported by Victor Marchetti,
once a CIA insider and in more recent years affiliated with the
Liberty Lobby. SHAWCIA.TXT consists of two parts. There is first
an analysis of Marchetti's account of what he was hearing at CIA
headquarters during the Garrison investigation. Secondly, there is
an internal CIA memo dealing with the Garrison investigation, and
describing the relationship of various figures in New Orleans with
the CIA.

** Jim Garrison's key witness in his case against Clay Shaw was a
certain Perry Raymond Russo. During the Shaw trial, Russo told a
story of an "assassination party" in which Shaw, David Ferry, and Lee
Oswald discussed killing Kennedy. Yet Russo's testimony
underwent an interesting "evolution" between the time he first
came forward in Baton Rouge and his court testimony. RUSSO1.TXT
is the text of two articles in Baton Rouge newspapers describing
Russo's initial story. RUSSO2.TXT is a memo that outlines Russo's
story when he was *first* approached by Moo Moo Sciambra of the Orleans
Parish District Attorney's office. It describes what he was saying
before he was taken to New Orleans to be given "truth serum" and put
under hypnosis. Also included: Jim Garrison's description of Russo's
testimony. Finally, RUSSO3.TXT is Sciambra's description of the story
Russo told under the influence of "truth serum" at Mercy Hospital in New
Orleans.

** When Perry Raymond Russo took the stand during the preliminary
hearing at the Shaw trial, he told a story radically different from
the one he told Sciambra in Baton Rouge (see above). Journalist
James Phelan confronted Garrison with the descrepancy, and a meeting
at Garrison's house followed. GURVICH.TXT describes that meeting,
which resulted in investigator William Gurvich defecting from the
Garrison team. The passage is from AMERICAN GROTESQUE.

THE MEDICAL EVIDENCE

** The "magic bullet" picture you never see in the conspiracy books:
CE 399 viewed end-on. It's CE399.GIF. See for yourself whether this
bullet is really "pristine."

** Randy Robertson claims to have found, in the x-rays of Kennedy's
skull, evidence of two bullet hits to Kennedy's head. This is his
statement to Rep. Conyer's subcommittee of the U.S. Congress in
November 1993. Also included is one of the reviews of his article
that caused the journal RADIOLOGY to reject it, as well as a brief
critique from me. ROBERTSN.TXT

** Speaking of the head wound, the distribution of bullet fragments
in Kennedy's brain, as shown in the autopsy x-rays, gives a lot of
information about the bullet that hit Kennedy, and (more importantly)
rules out a variety of theories about the head shot. WOUND1.GIF is a
drawing, from conspiracy author Charles Wilber, of the distribution of
fragments. Drawn from the work of Cyril Wecht, it is quite consistent
with Lattimer's drawings in KENNEDY AND LINCOLN.

** John Lattimer has done several experiments to determine whether
the Single Bullet Theory is scientifically supportable. In WOUND3.TXT
he deals with the question: were there so many fragments in John
Connally that they could not all have come from CE 399. In
WOUND2.TXT, he deals with the question: could an exit wound in the
front of Kennedy's neck *look* like an entrance wound.

** The nature of Kennedy's head wound has been a matter of continuing
controversy. ANGEL1.GIF, ANGEL2.GIF, and ANGEL3.GIF are the report Dr.
Lawrence Angel, a forensic anthropologist of the Smithsonian Institution,
submitted to the HSCA. Particularly interesting is Angel's drawing of
the damage shown in the photos and x-rays in ANGEL3.GIF.

** Years before Lattimer's KENNEDY AND LINCOLN was published, Josiah
Thompson carefully scrutinized the evidence on the issue of whether the
bullet fragments found in John Connally had (in total) too much mass to
have come from CE 399. WOUND5.TXT is the section of SIX SECONDS IN
DALLAS dealing with this issue.

** Conspiracy books describe the Dallas doctors as being absolutely sure
that the wound in Kennedy's throat was an entrance wound. What they
usually omit is the fact that the doctors who actually saw the wound
speculated that it was an exit wound from a fragment from the head shot.
They also imply that ER personnel can easily tell whether a wound is an
entrance wound or an exit would. WOUND4.TXT consists of two parts. The
first documents the speculations of the Dallas doctors about the wound,
and the second is a passage from the JAMA describing a careful study of
the ability of ER personnel to make judgments about the forensic aspects
of wounds.

** In 1981, THE BOSTON GLOBE has a panel of photographic experts
closely examine the photos and x-rays from Kennedy's autopsy to
determine their authenticity. Bob Groden was there making his case
that they were faked. Read AUTOPSY1.TXT to see how much success he
had.

** AUTOPYS2.TXT is the same exercise as AUTOPSY1.TXT, but in spades. It
is the report of the experts who authenticated the autopy photos and
x-rays for the House Select Committee on Assassinations. If you actually
believe that Harrison Livingstone is an expert on the photos and x-rays,
you need to read this. Accompanying this file is METRIC.GIF, a graphic
showing the face measurements forensic anthropologists used to establish
that the person in the autopsy photos was John F. Kennedy.

** The most famous piece of missing evidence in the world is John
Kennedy's brain. What happened to it? Did The Conspiracy grab it
because it contained incontrovertible evidence that Kennedy was shot
from the front? The HSCA made a strong effort to find out what
happened. BRAIN.TXT is their report.

** Another supposed piece of missing evidence is a bullet that
Admiral Osborne said he saw fall out of the wrapping of Kennedy's body
when it arrived at Bethesda. OSBORNE.TXT is the HSCA's investigation
of this claim.

** Conspiracy books describe, based on a very selective use of Dr.
Finck's testimony in the Clay Shaw trial, an autopsy in which shadowy
sinister military figures prevented a proper autopsy. AUTOPSY3.TXT is
the investigation of the autopsy by the HSCA, and is based on interviews
with virtually all the participants. See just why it is that such a poor
job was done. An added bonus: that receipt for a "missile" is explained.

** A critique of the body alteration theories of David Lifton
written by Bob Artwohl. Originally messages on Compuserve addressed
to Lifton. Lifton failed to respond. Uploaded here by permission of
Artwohl. LIFTON.TXT

** One controversial question about the medical evidence is the angle
at which the shot that hit Kennedy in the back transited his torso.
The HSCA posited a nearly flat transit, that would have required
Kennedy to be slumped forward. ANGLE.JPG and NECK.JPG show Bob
Artwohl's analysis of the issue. Artwohl differs with the HSCA, and
believes the bullet transited at a downward angle. Uploaded by
permission.

** Kennedy's shirt had holes in the collar, and the fibers around
these holes were pushed outward. The Warren Commission took this as
evidence that a bullet exited Kennedy's neck. Many conspiratorialists
believe that a bullet *entered* Kennedy's neck, and that it entered
above the tie, and could not have made the holes in the shirt collar.
NECKEXIT.JPG is Artwohl's analysis, using an autopsy photograph and a
photograph of Kennedy in the motorcade to show that the bullet must
have passed through the collar and the tie. Uploaded by permission.

LEE HARVEY OSWALD

** An whole raft of "Second Oswald" and "Alias Oswald" theories
imply that somebody besides Oswald may be buried in the cemetery in
Fort Worth. Indeed, the documentary THE MEN WHO KILLED KENNEDY gave
credence to such theories. This article, LHOEXH.TXT, is written by
Duke Lane and is based on the report, prepared by pathologists, of the
examination of Oswald's corpse during his exhumation in 1980.
Included with Lane's permission.

** A small collection of Lee Harvey Oswald .GIF images. All 256 color
grayscale. OSWALD1.GIF is Oswald as the smiling Marine. OSWALD2.GIF is
the famous shot of Oswald in custody. Is this the Communist
clinched-fist salute, or is he merely showing his shackles to the
press? You decide. I'm personally not sure. OSWALD3.GIF is the
Friday night news conference, and OSWALD4.GIF is the Dallas Police
mug shot of the just-arrested suspect.

** The HSCA analysis of the famous Oswald backyard photos. If you're
used to reading the likes of Jack White on this subject, you'll find
this a revelation. PHOTOS.TXT

** The Walker assassination attempt is an extremely important
incident, judged by both the Warren Commission and by the House Select
Committee to indicate Oswald's propensity for violence. How strong is
the evidence against Oswald? See WALKER.TXT, the Warren Commission
Report dealing with this incident. If Oswald shot at Walker, it is
extremely easy to believe that he shot at Kennedy seven months later.

** Wes Frazier said he saw Lee Oswald carry a package into the School
Book Depository on the morning of Nov. 22, 1963, tucked beneath his arm.
This point of a vast significance, since the Mannlicher-Carcano rifle
later discovered in the Depository could not have been carried this way.
Could Frazier have been mistaken? Read his Warren Commission testimony,
and see whether seemed sure of his observation. The file is FRAZIER.TXT.

"STRANGE" AND "CONVENIENT" DEATHS

** The death of Lee Bowers seemed "strange" to Oliver Stone, to
Geraldo Rivera, and to Jim Marrs. David Perry is an insurance
investigator by profession, and an assassination buff by avocation.
See what he concluded. BOWERS.TXT

** Another "mysterious" death was that of David Ferrie. Did he
commit suicide to avoid being prosecuted for Kennedy's murder by DA
Garrison? Was he killed by minions of The Conspiracy? In DEATH1.TXT,
Dr. Robert Artwohl discusses Jim Garrison's contention that Ferrie
died of an overdose of Proloid, a thyroid medication. Garrison's
handling of this issue says quite a lot about Garrison.

** George deMohrenschildt was one of Lee Oswald's most interesting
friends. His testimony before the Warren Commission said nothing that
suggested a conspiracy, but in later years he started to give a much
more "interesting" account. DeMohrenschildt's suicide in 1977 has
seemed quite "suspicious" to conspiracy buffs. DEATH2.TXT is the
Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office Death Investigation on
deMohrenschildt's passing. See whether there is any evidence of
murder.

CONSPIRACY AUTHORS AND WITNESSES

** Three files on L. Fletcher Prouty, the model of Oliver Stone's
Mr. X. PROUTY.TXT is Edward Jay Epstein's treatment of him in ASSASSINATION
CHRONICLES. PROUTY2.TXT is David Perry's article on Prouty's claim that
the New Zealand media had the scoop on Oswald's background "suspiciously"
quickly. Finally, PROUTY3.TXT is a critique, written from a leftist
perspective by Chip Berlet, of the ties between Prouty (and,
incidentally, Mark Lane) and the extreme right-wing paranoid Liberty
Lobby.

** A new file on Prouty, PROUTY4.TXT is a critique of the author's JFK
book. Written by Dave Fuhrmann, it was posted as a series of messages
on the Compuserve POLITICS Forum. It is reposted here by permission.

** Jack Ruby's famous "I want to go to Washington" testimony before
the Warren Commission. Did he really want to blow the whistle on The
Conspiracy in D.C.? RUBY1.TXT

** Another article by Duke Lane, COWTOWN.TXT examines the Fort Worth
connection in the assassination, and tests the veracity of a claim by
Robert Morrow about the arrest of a "Maurice Bishop" in Fort Worth.
Also: the Tim Tilson auto chase. Uploaded by permission.

** Citizens for Truth in the Kennedy Assassination (CTKA) recently
published a document (a police report), supposedly detailing an
altercation between Jack Ruby and Lee Oswald at Mrs. Bledsoe's
boarding house. (Why were they fighting? Weren't they
coconspirators?). BLEDSOE.TXT is researcher David Perry's analysis of
the document. The fact that CTKA, Jim Marrs, and Jack White all
embraced the document is interesting.

** Speaking of "documents:" a note supposedly written by Oswald and
addressed to a "Mr. Hunt" surfaced during the HSCA investigation. It
supposedly ties Oswald to either E. Howard Hunt, or H.L. Hunt. The
HSCA gave the document to its panel of handwriting experts, and
MRHUNT.TXT is their report.

** The much cited claim that Robert Kennedy said that "only the
powers of the Presidency" would get to the bottom of his brother's
death. One person in the audience during the speech when he supposedly
said this was author David Lifton. This is his own account from
Compuserve. RFKCLAIM.TXT, uploaded with Lifton's permission.

** Clark Merrill tried to track this same claim about Bobby Kennedy in
news reports from the 1968 Presidential Primary campaign. BOBBY2.TXT
details what Bobby actually said. Compare it to what some conspiracy
authors said he said.

** Books on the assassination often assert that Helen Markham said
that the man who shot Tippit was short, heavy, and with bushy hair.
At least, that is what Mark Lane told the Warren Commission. Here is
a transcript of Lane's telephone interview with Lane. Get LANE1.TXT
AND Judge for yourself whether Markham was an easily manipulated
witness, and whether Lane was an honest advocate.

** If you are interested in Lane, also get LANE2.TXT. It is author
Jean Davison's autobiographical account of her experience when she
went to the Warren Commission volumes to see whether Jack Ruby's
testimony actually said what Lane claimed that it did.

** Also get LANE3.TXT, an analysis of how Lane dealt with the
testimony of Julia Ann Mercer, a witness who claimed to have seen
Jack Ruby and Lee Harvey Oswald together in Dealey Plaza shortly
before the assassination.

** TOOBIG.TXT is an article written by Fred Litwin. Litwin asks about
the credibility of any theory that holds that a conspiracy faked all the
evidence that conspiracy theorists say is faked. A copyrighted article,
upload at the request of Litwin.

** Finally, two crackpot classics: The Torbitt Document (TORBIT.TXT)
and The Gemstone Files (GEMSTONE.TXT). Enough conspiracy paranoia
in these two to keep any buff tied up for a day or two, at least :-).

Let me know about any technical problems.
