I havent done this but once or twice, but I can post some info on
it from a text file.
I just came across a listing of Robert Monroe's techniques for astral
projection, and thought I'd post them in condensed form for those of you
interested in AP. I can personally recommend Monroe's two books JOURNEYS
OUT OF THE BODY, and FAR JOURNEYS. Here goes:
1) Relax the body. Progressive muscle relaxation coupled with deep breathing
exercises (inhale 1, exhale 2, inhale 3, ....until 50 or 100.) are known to
work well. The Monroe Institute, Route 1, Box 175, Faber VA 22938, Phone
(804) 361-1252, sells tapes and even has weekend and weeklong retreats for
the purpose of APing. They have developed it into a science, and have patented
the HemiSync technology of making AP audio tapes.
2) Enter the state bordering sleep, or hypnagogic state. One way is to hold
your forearm up, elbow on bed, as you fall asleep. When you do, the arm will
drop and awaken you. Another method is to concentrate on an object. When other
images start to enter your thoughts, you have entered the hypnagogic state.
Passively watch these images, this will help you maintain this state of near-
sleep Monroe referrs to as Condition A.
3) Deepen this state. Begin to clear your mind. Observe your field of vision
through closed eyes. Do nothing more for a while. Simply observe the black
field before you. After a while you may notice light patterns. These are
simply neural discharges, ignore them. When they stop, you have entered what
Monroe calls Condition B. From here, enter a deeper state of relaxation called
Condition C in which you lose all awareness of body and sensory stimulation.
You are almost in a void in which your thoughts are the only source of
stimulation. The ideal state for leaving your body is Condition D, which is
Condition C when entered in a rested and refreshed condition and not the effect
of normal fatigue. To achieve Condition D, Monroe suggests that you practice
entering it in the morning, or after a nap.
4) Enter a state of Vibration. This is the most important part of the technique
and also the most vague. Many APers have noted these vibrations at the onset of
projection. They can be described as a mild tingling, or as if electricity is
being shot through the body. Their cause is a mystery. (Perhaps increasing your
rate of vibration?) It may actually be the astral body leaving the physical one.
For entering the vibrational state, Monroe offers the following:
A.) Remove all jewelry/items touching the skin.
B.) Darken the room so that no light penetrates your eyelids, but do not
totally darken the room.
C.) Lie down with your body on a North-South axis, head to the North.
D.) Loosen all clothing, but remain covered so you're warmer than normal.
E.) Locate/schedule yourself to avoid disturbances.
F.) Enter a state of relaxation.
G.) Suggest to yourself you will remember all in the upcoming session that
will be beneficial to your well-being. Repeat five times.
H.) Proceed to breathe thorough your half-open mouth.
I.) As you breathe, concentrate on the void before you.
J.) Concentrate on a point a foot in front of your forehead, then move out to
six feet.
K.) Turn the point 90 degrees upward by drawing an imaginary line parallel to
your body and up and above your head. Focus there and reach out for the
vibrations at that point and draw them back into your body. Even if you don't
know what these vibrations are, you will know when you have achieved contact
with them.
5) Learn to control the vibrational state. Practice mentally pushing them into
your head, down to your toes, making them surge throughout your entire body,
producing vibrational waves from head to foot. To produce this wave effect,
concentrate on the vibrations and mentally push a wave out of your head and
guide it down your body. Once you have control of the vibrational state, you
are ready to leave the body.
6) Begin with partial separation. The key is thought control. Focus firmly
on leaving your body. Do not let it wander. If it does, gently guide it back.
Having entered the vibrational state, begin the Out of Body Experience (OBE)
by releasing a hand or foot of the "second body". Monroe suggests you extend
a limb until it comes in contact with a familiar object. Return the limb to
coincidence with the physical. Decrease the vibrational rate and terminate
the experiment. Lie quietly until you have fully returned to normal. This
exercise will prepare you for a full separation.
7) Dissociate yourself from the body. Monroe suggests two methods for this:
A.) Method one is the "lift out". To perform a lift-out concentrate on getting
lighter and lighter after entering the vibrational state. Think about how nice
it would be to float upward. Maintain this thought against all interruptions,
and the OBE will occur naturally at this point.
B.) Method two is the "rotation method", or "roll out". From the vibrational
state, try to roll over, as if you were turning over in bed. Do not attempt
to roll over physically. Try to twist your body from the top, and try to roll
your astral body right out of the physical. At this point, you will be out of
the body, next to it. Think of floating upward and you should find yourself
floating above the body.
It is recommended to empty the bladder before attempting OBE as any physical
sensations immediately return you to the physical. Because of this, any need
to return to the physical, at any time, can be effected by moving a part of
the physical body, which you retain full control of, such as wiggling a
finger.
It is a wise precaution, before APing, to surround yourself with a white light
of protection, along with an affirmation of your purpose and a request that you
be protected from any negative energies, and that only good may come from you
and to you.
Happy Trails!
